I've bolded the text for you to make it easier. I make out VAT was never passed on? Jesus really, you really do take the buscuit at times.
The full VAT rise doesn't always get passed on to the consumer. Therefore you cannot simply strip the full VAT rise out of CPI and say "oh look, that looks better".

So to be clear, for CPI-Y to be innacurate shops would have not passed on the vat increase of Jan 2010 for 11 months.
This is DEC 2010 figures. the figures are YoY so the figures they are against are DEC 09 when VAT was 15%.

For it to be accurate (for your reversal calculations) ALL shops would have had to pass on the increase on ALL products. This is obviously not the case.

After 11 months how many shops do you think had not passed on the 15% - 17.5% increase?

I am not saying it is 100% spot on but neither is the CPI calculation. But I am finding it hard to believe people are telling me they never passed on a VAT rise for 11 months and are now looking to do the same.
My argument would be it may be more preverlent near the introduction but after a year it would have been implemnted. Either by raising price or not passing on discount. That would be passed on to the CPI data.

Thats the point, I do not know and neither do you, but you are assuming assuming all of them. I would suspect less.

I wish I could have put it into 2 sentences like that!!!

Instead, I made the mistake of using an example for Tesco on a TV, and now I'm labelled as suggesting (or painting the picture that) all shops have done what they did and no shops have passed on the rise.:wall:

You are assuming it is not passed on after 12 months?????

Perhaps we should give up all the indexes then as they are produced under the same methods by the same people.
I could state CPI does not factor in price drops not passed on but CPI-Y does?

If we start questioning all these stats you only undermining your own arguments.

The CPI and CPI-Y info is done by the same data, same people. Arguing one is way off is as acceptable as arguing the other is.

It is fairly unlikely the increases were not passed on after 12 months, we all accept that, and we all accept this is YoY data? we all accept assuming is wrong? so where is the argument.

God knows if I can find it now. You've moved the goalposts yet again, and are now trying to look back 12 months and talk about last year which no one else is talking about.

You were quite happy to talk about this years VAT rise 3 pages ago, when you were showing us all how if you strip this out, CPI is blah blah.

Graham both indexes are YoY that means compared to 12 moths ago. How the hell is that moving goal posts.
Do some research then come back with some logic.

Not as funny as you saying looking at 12 months is moving the goalposts on inflation data.

I think you would be better of playing with Jumpers GD, they are easier to move.;)
