Hi my name is Sox, I am a 3yr old, male, neutered, Akita x. I was brought in as a stray. I like other dogs and children over 8yrs. Vaccinated, neutered and chipped.

Advertising him as liking other dogs on their website might be putting people off - if I only wanted one dog then I wouldn't choose one who liked others, because I'd feel I was depriving him of much-wanted company of other dogs.

What is this, the RSPCA school of animal welfare campaigning?

It was the supposed 'non destruct' policy rescue statement they make but then threatening to do just that that angered me. I sent an email and got the following reply:

    Dear Madam,

Thank you for your email concerning Sox. We can understand how distressing situations like Soxs are for members of public but you must understand how our whole team feels after 9 months of caring for Sox, getting him back to health after being dumped on the streets by his old owner, having him vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped ready for a new home.

He is a good natured dog but finds kennels very unsettling and distressing, so the last 9 months has been no fun for him. We have tried all rescue such as RSPCA, Dogs Trust, etc. He can not go to other rescue foster homes as he cant go with other animals and as the whole country is in crisis over the amount of dogs being abandoned no other rescue will touch him.

We have been told by a council this week that we are the only rescue in Nottingham taking and re-homing the strays found in Nottingham and local areas. If you think how big Nottingham is that's a hell of a job for a private kennels to try and do, with just our 55 kennels.

Our situation with Sox is nothing to do with money or space, we are here for our dogs and to keep them happy mentally and physically, so when one of our dogs is no longer mentally coping with kennels we have to try and find an out for them, which we all ways do. Sometimes when you push the public you find that home you have been waiting for and I'm happy to say a Lady that has rehabilitated German Shepard dogs in the past is coming to see Sox this week to offer him a home.

Again we thank you for your concern but we do try everything for our dogs for them to be happy and this is the first time in 7yrs of owning the kennels we have even had to think about this with a dog.

    regards

but it's fair to have him PTS? Either they have a non-destruct policy or they dont?

    Poor Sox :(

I agree, surely they could find a foster home for him for a short time or get in touch with other rescues? This is not the first time babbington has made me frown.
  • that's good news then I hope he gets a home soon.

Its easy for a lay person to judge the decisions rescue centres make. I can't imagine how on earth they do this job at all, it must be heart renching. I could never do it as I wouldnt be able to deal with all the upset and you must see the harsh side of human behaviour too.
My dog came from there and they are fantastic, they are all very caring and do the best for the dogs. Its a charity so obviously they dont have much spare cash and they were well over caapacity when I went to find my dog.

Lets hope this story has a happy ending, unfortunately there is a steady stream of dog in need of homes that no-one wants... :(

What a load of tosh. I would like to bet that Second Chance in Derby would take him in a flash. My Collie was on death row in a Welsh pound, to be destroyed within seven days, until Second Chance took her.

I have to say - I didn't find them at all caring toward the dogs when I was there to be honest, shrugged it off as them being totally overwhelmed but I got no help from them whatsoever when we got our guy.

I won't ever rehome an animal from a shelter which doesn't have a non destruct policy. More than anything else I don't like that emotional blackmail aspect of it "pick this one it's got 5 days to live" or "pick this one - more suitable but he's got a fortnight left" clouding judgements over which is the right animal for us.

I've got a vague memory of actually seeing the guy in question to be honest - nothing plugging him trying to get him a home (if he's the guy I remember he was busy eating his way through his bed) - they've just given up and are resorting to a really nasty emotional blackmail tactic (the "push the public" line says a LOT about why this was done) to try to get him either a home or a trip to the vets :( That's the sort of crap I expect from the RSPCA to be honest.

Give it a couple of months and we'll be repeating this again with the next long-termer. I feel quite angry - like I say, my guy had dropped to page 5 on their dogs page, he'd been in getting toward three months - what would have happened when HIS 9 months were up?
