Contraceptive Patch

Hi everyone,

Has anyone got any experience of the contraceptive patch? As it is, I only use condoms but wanted something as a back up (as well as not instead).

There was a thread about this early last year but I thought there might be a few more responses now.

Thanks all.

i used it. i found it fantastic . put it on leave it on for a week and then pull off and replace in a different area. it worked excellent. ( i'm awful at remembering to take a pill) it was a skin colour patch and i found it best on top of my thighs.

however after about 6 months i found in the summer as i got hot it would itch alot and it go the point it hurt so much , due to it irratating my skin. but then i have very sensative skin and i struggle even with a normal plaster . i'd use it again, but for me winter use is fine. summer use is my prob.

It's something I've thought about, but to be honest I don't like the idea of that sort of thing being 'planted' into me. The Pill isn't an option for me either. I thought the contraceptive patch might be a way round any issues with those things.

i also found with the patch tho i had evra it isn't something the doc's give out much. i had to do my reaseach and almost beg for it. It is a very low dose and it very new. so i found it didn't mess about with my body much.

I have the implant - it got to the point where I was constantly forgetting my pill!

I was really worried about it, but it really is nothing! I barely felt a thing and now don't have to worry.

It lasts 3 years and for the first year can make your periods a bit erratic - I had my implant in July and haven't had a period since!

Hmm, i want this after i've given birth.

I always forget to take the pill, im not having the implant put back in and i refuse to go and get an injection every 3 months.
Will that be a good enough reason for them do you think?

i just told them that i done my reasearch. i am useless at taking the pill, the jab made me put on weight, refuse to have an implant or coil or anything put up inside me, and i don't mind the implant going in, but i will for 3 years be bricking it coming out. so i said politely after doing my research it is the best option for me and i want it. doc got his book out, nurse got her book out and finally they agreed.
  • I have the injection. You do need to watch your weight with it (I can't eat what I used to and I'm constantly trying to diet) but for me it is the only option. Can't be faffing with patches I'm too disorganised, the implant gave me horrendous bleeding and I always forgot to take the pill. The injection really suits me because it's easy to get done and it doesn't really hurt (short sharp scratch). I think you just need to decide what's best for you and then be able to show your Dr you've considered every option. Don't let them push you into what THEY think is best they don't know your body as a woman like you do. That's how I ended up with the implant which was an absolute disaster!

Well I asked my doc about the patch and they really didn't recommend it, said it hadn't been tested enough and most surgeries won't give it out due to its cost. This was a few years ago now though....
Personally would never recommend the Implant - yes it works as a contraceptive but only because I bled constantly for months on end - it was also hell to get removed, doc's didn't want to remove it and told me to stick with it - had enough and ended up getting it removed at the clinic down the hospital.
I could never get anything like the implant or coil again - the thought of being stuck with it is horrible. At least with things like the pill or patch you can stop using it when you want. I need to feel in control of my body....
