O2 phones NOT locked to network

I have just signed up with O2 on a monthly contract and got a free Motorola V547. I wanted to know if it was locked to O2 so I tried a friends Orange PAYG sim and it worked fine. It seems its NOT locked. I mentioned this to a another friend and its the same on her Nokia with O2. Does anyone know if this the norm?

  • All O2 contract phone are supplied unlocked. At the end of the day they have a 12 month contract and I suppose if you want to use someone elses network they aren't bothered as long as they get there monthly fee. On the other hand though all O2 PAYG's appear to be supplied locked to network.
  • Does anyone know if I could use my O2 PAYG SIM in my friend's old O2 contract phone? O2 have sent him a new phone and he's just not using the old one (which was a bit dodgy but works fine most of the time).

Hope I'm not hijacking, but it kinda comes under the same topic so I don't want to start another thread.

Yes, you can. If a phone is locked, it means that it it is locked to a particular network (ie o2, Vodaphone, T-Mobile, Orange). If your friend's phone is locked to o2, it will work with your o2 PAYG sim card.

Is it contract or PAYG? I got hold of this info 12 months ago when I took out 2 contracts for my sons and queried it on another forum.
