John West tinned stewed steak in gravy - yuk!

I remember having tinned stewed steak as a youngster and loved it, one of those childhood taste memories that has stuck!
I saw some in Netto last week (whilst picking up their weekly offers!) and bought 2 tins for dinner that night. On opening it I noticed how it smelled EXACTLY the same as budget dog food......I kid you not.
The taste was as bad if not worse! 2 forkfuls was all I could manage and the rest went outside for the resident fox who ALSO took one sniff and walked away.
What on earth is in that stuff??! Does anybody in MSE World like it??!

The other day I was in Home Bargains having a look around and found packs of Vesta Curry. This was another thing I liked as a teenager but I didn't risk buying it this time.0 -
I find that many things I loved as a kid taste disgusting to me now. I guess, as a child, you used to eat what you were given and learned to like it, perhaps your taste buds weren't yet fully developed or something
I know that I used to live on Campbells Meat Balls, but tried them recently they were vile.

I had pretty much an identical experience with the same product. I nearly didn't make the stew I had planned after the first 'dog food' whiff!
However I went ahead basically because I had all the other ingredients lined up and combined with those it tasted fine BUT I think I would hesitate to buy it again.
I'll stick to meat I can see inside the pack on the very rare occasions I buy any.~*~ If you don't need it, it isn't a bargain ~*~0 -

I experienced the same with this John West stewed steak in gravy.
I always purchased Sainsbury's premium stewed steak in gravy which had something like 85% meat, but they stopped selling it, so I picked up a tim of John West's from B&M. It has around 65% meat so I wasn't expecting the same as Sainsbury's but once opened I thought it looked worse than the dog food I have given to my dogs.
I couldn't see any resembalance of "meat". If it wasn't for the fact I had already started to prepare others parts of the meal I may well have just binned it. It did taste O.K. but we won't be buying it again. It was the worst stewed steak in gravy we have ever tasted.0 -
they have probably reduced the salt content and taken out MSG out of it.
Other than that is probably similar and your mind playing tricks on you.0 -

Well reading the comments here, it does seem that "no 1" (???) is buying it!I find that many things I loved as a kid taste disgusting to me now. You could be spot on there - I couldn't eat garlic when I was younger but now I love it....they have probably reduced the salt content and taken out MSG out of it.

No, I'm pretty sure that my mind isn't that devious!0 -
