I think my insurance is a rare one they sent me 3 reminders and the last one said they do not automatically
renew unless i contact them to confirm.

Some insurers do not automactically renew.
Obviously in this case you still need to be on top of things to make sure you are insured.
The majority seem to auto renew. As well as meaning that people don't drive without insurance it also means they will get more business from those that forget or don't shop around (the majority).
  • well I cant renew and I have 28 days to pay up as I cancelled the DD and didnt tell them I have asked for it to be posted out in a letter so I can read through it.

Feel free to post up the figures so they can be checked.

I am fairly certain that there will be an element for short term rates for the cover you had (minus of course you payments).
Plus there will be an admin fee which should not be more than £75.

If the short term rates are correct (according to the policy you accepted) and the fee is not too high, then you owe the money.

Sorry it didn't work out better.
  • thanks for your help. I will now make sure everything is in order and not let another expensive mistake happen!

Don't beat yourself up too much.
Although it's ultimately your responsibility, it's true to say that the insurers have things stitched up in their favour and some deliberately don't send renewals (although we cannot be sure what happened in your case).
