If I call and reinstate the policy do you think that would mean I dont ruin my record?

    Yes, you should try it.
However you should be aware that they might not agree, so I would eat some humble pie.
  • ok i will ring them apologise and hope! any tips on specifically what to say?

While I agree with the other posters about this being a bit of a mess... Have you raised the point that you had not rec'd any notice of renewal from them?! They should have sent you a new policy! If they havent done this, Id say theyre in the wrong!

You've been looking after your ill mother, been very stressed and not keeping on top of your correspondance as you've been staying way from home.
In view of the fact that this is a first offence and less than two weeks, then could they see their way to re-instating your policy.
If they havent done this, Id say theyre in the wrong!

I really wouldn't try to get arsey with them, not at this point anyway.
You don't know they didn't send it (could have been lost in the post).
If the policy started October then that's not really a justification for cancelling the DD in January.
  • I think it is my responsibilty to check on things but I did not recieve any corresponce so should have chased it up.

    lesson learnt!

Yes, post can get genuinely lost (or cynical companies may not send in the hope you get renewed automatically) so it's better to be proactive.

I keep all my dates in a list then I know what's coming up in date order e.g.

    bonus saving accounts end date
    ISA bonus account end date
    car tax
    car service
    car MOT
    house insurance
    boiler service
    alarm service
    car recovery policy
    etc.
  • list is in progress!! MOT was done on friday one ticked off.
Just rang company and grovelled waiting for a call back

Did they auto renew the policy and you cancelled the direct debit? That made them cancel the policy?

I think my insurance is a rare one they sent me 3 reminders and the last one said they do not automatically
renew unless i contact them to confirm.

  • yes they auto renew apparently that is there thing and I realised I was paying a higher premium on my bank statement and realised the insuarance had ran out so searched for another cheaper as you do. I cancelled the DD to the policy which i thought was ok I now know that was the wrong thing to do.
  • still waiting for a callback should I ring back he said in he would call in five minutes?
