Er yes you can. I was asked to do it for my boyf on our last property as he failed the credit check. Not sure it was worth the paper it was written on, but the LA asked.
It may be a little theatrical but "oh no you can't".
However, I suspect that the paper, although worthless from the point of view of claiming any repayment from yourself, was actually quite valuable to the agent in terms of the fees they charged you to prepare it. Disgusting.

Nope, no extra fees. We could go on like this forever!
But in summary, they said he failed the credit check (which is highly likely) and asked if I would guarantee his portion of the rent. I said I would and hence they would let us move in.
