thats my situation - thankfully hes not wanting to be sexually active at home and is girlfriendless at present but as he is sharing with his brother not sister we have no hope of ever getting a bigger house unless we exchange .
I have considered private renting but there is no way we can afford it - so we are stuck - its not great and i would give anything to be able to by a house but i am still grateful that we have a roof over our heads .I am journeying to a debt-free life.
Our estimated debt-free date is January 2040. I'm on a mission to bring that date closer!

Hi,
I really sympathize.
I am more or less in the same situation as you. I am on a council estate and we live right next to a playground and I cant handle all the teenagers out there in the evenings screaming, fighting and getting drunk.
We are currently looking at private renting just to escape it all, it has come to the point now where I really dont care we are giving up our HA flat,I want the happiness of my family to come first. These teenagers keep us all up at night and disturb my baby, they cause me and my partner to row, theres so much stress. I dread coming home whenever I go out and dread the evenings.
We have tried homeswapper but no one is interested as the area has a bad reputation.
Getting out of here is the best thing we are ever going to do. Imagine moving where your kids have your own rooms and you feel safe, you only live once and if you feel you can handle the rent I would go for it,think how much happier you would be. Maybe have a look around at other houses too to compare rents.
I wish you all the luck and go with your heart.

I am having the same dilema as you at the moment. I live in a 3 bed HA flat with my 13 and 15 year old. We have 3 bedrooms but only the kitchen and small lounge.
The property has absolutely no soundproofing and my neighbours downstairs are making my life a misery with their loud music being played every day at varying times for varying amounts of time. The music is sooo loud that I can hear it in every room in my home and it has got to the point where I can't even use the front room. I end up sitting in my bedroom if I want to read or watch TV.
This has been going on for years and I have tried asking them to keep the volume down but they take no notice. I last spoke to them two weeks ago after the music had been on from 8am Saturday morning all day and then again from 9am on the Sunday. I had the door slammed in my face.
I have spoken to Envronmental Health and my HA but they really don't do anything. The neighbours in question are a disabled couple (both in wheelchairs) in their 50's and it seems that no one wants to accept that they could possibly be at fault.
I am at my wits end. I have lived here for 10 years and the problems only started after her boyfriend (now husband) moved in 4 years ago.
I am seriously thinking about giving up my HA tenancy and moving to a private rented house in a nicer area. The area I live in has also started to go downhill. They are building a 500 home new estate round the corner of which the majority of houses will be let to social housed families. We already are in a deprived area with little in the way of work opportunities or things to keep the kids off the streets.
I want my teenagers to be in a nicer area where drugs are not being sold in the street outside my house (as they are now).
I have managed to save up enough money for the first months rent and a friend has offered to lend me the deposit. I work but get HB as i am on a low income. I would still qualify for HB if I move and in fact would be paying less out of my own pocket than I am now.
The problem is giving up a secured tenancy. I rented privately when my children were young after my marriage broke up for 4 years and luckily only moved twice in that time and had nice landlords. However my last LL had to sell up and I ended up homeless which led me to being housed by thew council. First in temp accommodation for 8 weeks then moved to my current home.
I keep going over and over the problem in my head and really don't know what to do. Some friends think I should go for it but my Mum and Dad are totally against me giving up my secure tenancy.
Only time, and my shattered nerves, will tell what I will do. At the moment I dread living in my home!0 -
I agree with people who suggest that you think about your family's wellbeing. Yes, consider your budget carefully and the pros of secured tenancy vs. the cons of staying where you are. I seriously doubt that they would abolish LHA, but leave HB. LHA was introduced to cap maximum benefit and is based on your local average rent.
We are also moving into private rent from HA house. We have two children and I want them to grow up in a good area! Yes, rent is higher, but area is nice and so are the families around. We are lucky that the landlord owns several cottages (part of a farm estate) and that he tends to let for life (ie. until you move out or die).
We have considered our options carefully and were scared of leaving HA, but now that decision was made and that we know where we are going, we are happy and looking forward to it.
Some risks just do not outweigh the benefits

LOL, only on planet celibacy
I do hope my kids are not sexually active early, but I suspect by 18 they might be. And hopefully still getting good education and having my house as main home

Well surely seeing as he is almost 10 you will be entitiled to a 3 bed? what area do you live in, and are you on the transfer list with the council?beyond_skint wrote: »Hi thank you so much for your responses. We have to move as my 2 children (boy and girl) share my son is 10 next month and my girl is 6. The room is tiny and the estate is horrible.
We are self employed but do get some help with the rent from the council. We pay £73 a week here but the house we are interested in is £650 a ,month. Which we will get about half paid maybe a bit less.
We have been trying to swap get rehoused for the last 6yrs with no luck. The estate is getting known for not being nice so no one will swap and theres 14000 on the waiting list we are band c so theres 2 bands above us and there will always be homeless coming in.
I can't see another way of moving if we dont take this house. Hes said he wont need it for at least 5yrs so its a long let, which is good. And I guess we could always go back on the housing list.0 -
I used to be in HA house and moved to private renting. I did regret it initially and thought I was stupid for doing it.
I'm now back on the CBA scheme BUT the rent for the properties is average £95 a week, so it doesnt make me regret it so much anymore because the rent is not that much cheaper than what we pay privately.
If there was a big difference in the rent or we had a horrible landlord then I'm sure I would feel differently.0
