Golden Coasts Woolacombe, Devon

Hi I've just booked a sun holiday to Golden Coasts in Woolacombe, Devon. Just wondered if anyone had been there and what reviews there were.
Also wondering if there's much to do around there.
It's going to be me, hubby, 4 and 1 year old.

Thanks

Have you checked out Trip Advisor? Might be some useful information on there around the area. :)

That area is gorgeous and there's loads to do with kids. One place that'll be close to you is Watermouth Castle which has absolutely tons. Check out the North Devon website which is good...lets you search for types of attraction by area, depending how far you want to travel

Oh dear...you really ought to have read Trip Advisor before booking..........

I've been there...did the same as you - didn't read them. My friend booked & paid a deposit and I told her to keep clear of the place. She decided to take my word & then read Trip Advisor....glad she didn't go.

Find a cottage to rent & go...Devon is beautiful & I hope to return....but stay clear of Woolacombe parks!

    horses for courses

its all down to what you expect!

i went to the sister site three years ago (woolacombe bay, i think)

the place was ok, and what i would expect for a caravan site of that size, i.e. caravan was nice (looked newish), "night" club was ok (think of "the phoenix club" from phoenix nights) we had a few drinks generally watch the act and went back to the caravan, pool was ok, shop was ok. but didnt try the onsite restaurant.

woolacombe has a nice beach, and is good to learn surfing etc, but other than that the town is very small (i.e. 1 bar, 1 chip shop, a few shops)

we went for a weekend break and it was ok, we got what we were expecting
  • We stayed at golden coast last summer on a sun holiday, we had a chalet & it was very tired inside as well as dirty, now I know you can't expect much from a sun holiday but we've done at least 10 sun holidays(all caravans though) and this was by far the worst accomadation/site we've stayed on.
  • To be fair, I have read before, maybe even on here to avoid chalets, as there often more tired than caravans (prob easier to change a caravan than get a chalet refurbed)

We stayed in a caravan. very tired, dirty & dated. Right at the bottom of a very steep hil - which isn't mentioned in the brochure & its also on the other side of the road to the park so you feel very detached. Locks were broken on the windows, grill was filthy, leaky sunlight, wonky beds (made you feel you were rolling off them), problems with plumbing in the bathroom.....I can go on but you get my drift. Customer services stink, loads of fag butts outside every door way, staff in the entertainment place ware dire & miserable. No wolcome at all. Oh and when I entered the caravan the last occupiers dirty linen was crumpled on the bed & the receptionist had the cheek to ask me "are you sure they're dirty?".....I was so glad my kids started feeling unwell on the 3rd day so we left. By the time we drove 9 hours home they were better.

I complained & got a letter fromt he manager apologising & offered to "personally book" my next holiday. Even if it was free I'd never go there.

NEVER again. you have been warned!!

Woolacome is quite nice & the beach is great but 1 chip shop is lousy - esp when you see the queue for it!!
  • Thanks for everyone's advice. Though a lot of it is bad, hopefully we'll be lucky. I have heard some good things so i'll hope for that!!!
To be fair to woolacombe it's a seaside village so it's not going to have many shops or chip shops.
If i could afford to rent a cottage i would have done.
    thanks
  • Ok, there are lots of negative comments on here about the accomodation but I wanted to tell you a little bit about Woolacombe itself.

I love Woolacombe, the beach is fantastic. During the peak times you have to walk a little way to get lots of space, but if you are happy to not be too far away from others, you'll find plenty of room near the centre.

The sandwich/fudge/pasty shop is a must stop. There is a mini golf place near the beach. A few tourist shops. The pubs in the centre are nothing to shout about but there are a couple of nice pubs with beer gardens in North Morte. We normally camp at North Morte farm and the views are wonderful - especially when the sunset goes down as you are toasting the marshmallows.

If you have a car, Croyde is about a 20 minute drive. A bit busier than Woolacombe but with a few more shops.

I've never done anything else but sit on the beach when I've been but I love it. There are a few walks to do but probably not with your little ones.

Even if your accomodation isn't up to much I hope you like Woolacombe.
A big thank you to everyone who contibutes to the MSE forums :T
