We can all thank the following

    where there's a claim there's a blame

I've had an accident and demand stupid amounts of compensation

I've had an accident and the other party wasn't insured (ok not law abiding citizens fault )

The road was covered in snow / ice and I was only doing 28mph

I've had an accident and demand like for like car replacement ,when a smaller car would do

Garages who charge stupid amounts for repairs

    Fair enough.
It's nothing to do with record profits, record bonuses, record dividends. It's all the fault of the customers who use the service, so lets all dig deeper. No wonder insurers can now charge what they want.

Not a lot no if you look at the facts.

    Some of them yes.
Some use hire cars that are charged at ridiculous rates and think there will be no comeback or are too stupid to realise they have been duped until they get taken to court personally for the excessive charges.
Some seem determined to drive in solid ice regardless of the fact that it's treacherous.

Not all of us are like that of course, but the costs are passed on to all of us.

No wonder insurers can now charge what they want.

    I agree with you.
I am totally against fradulent medical claims, high solicitor charges, ridiculous gire car charges, people who drive without insurance, people who drive in treacherous condition because they have lost the use of their legs etc.
However insurers have to struggle with all these problems.

So often on here I see people recommended to go to claims management companies which just puts up the cost. What do you expect?
Of course prices will rise. They have to.
In so many ways, I'm glad I'm not young now.

    Be serious.
The biggest referrer to claims management companies are the insurance companies. From a thread a few lines down even the Co-Op are getting their referrers fee now.

All for a few hundred pounds from the third party company.

Is that not the basis for insurance? Everyone pays a small amount, the unfortunate few make a claim when they need to, and the insurer pays out to cover the loss from the accumulated fund? If the fund becomes low, everyone then pays a small amount more. Or do you have a different understanding?

    ermmm that's what I said...,

Maybe you phrased it badly then

They are running a business - they cannot keep paying out if people are not paying inn.

I know the claim was not your fault, but the insurance company has no way to claim the payout back other than raising your premium, or do you think they should raise everyones premium to cover your payout? (well they do that as well!)

As said best to change each year really, their is no discounts being a "loyal" customer these days, swap and swap again.

    Vipes

Indeed they shouldn't raise the op's premium, they should raise everyones premium to cover the payout.

I never said they were perfect.
They probably do have some bad habits also.
That doesn't mean they are responsible for ALL the problems such as increasing personal injury claims, fraud etc.

I don't see it as black and white. There are shades are grey.
You seem to think they are 100% evil full stop.
  • My elderly mother had a minor bump last year. She has a letter from the police saying they are not taking any action, but when her insurance was due for renewal, she had lost her NCD (not protected) and her premiums shot up. It doesnt seem right that she loses NCD if it wasnt her fault. Is there a way of persuading the insurer to be nice to her?
