Car insurance rocketed

Last year I had my car stolen after someone broke into my house and took my keys. They recovered the vehicle but declared it a write off totalling about £1800. I have protected no claims of over 9 years.

This year, my premium has gone from £50 per month to £180 per month!!! This means by the end of the year, they pretty much recover their £1800! Is this right/legal? Surely my premium's should not be affected.

It really makes you think what is the point in insurance when I'm paying for it in the long run anyway...

Shop round for insurance every year.
Protected no claims are a con to some degree, especially if you don't move companies. They will protect your ncd, but as you have found out, your premium is increased.

Sadly it is, my car insurance went up to with PNCD, they always get there money back one way or the other

Its best to shop around. I save £100 on building/contents simple by switching and I had no claims
  • I saved £195 yesterday by switching car insurance from Admiral to Aviva.

They are running a business - they cannot keep paying out if people are not paying inn.

I know the claim was not your fault, but the insurance company has no way to claim the payout back other than raising your premium, or do you think they should raise everyones premium to cover your payout? (well they do that as well!)

As said best to change each year really, their is no discounts being a "loyal" customer these days, swap and swap again.

Out of interest, what car was stolen (make, model, engine size) and what car is now insured (make, model, engine size, cost)?

Is that not the basis for insurance? Everyone pays a small amount, the unfortunate few make a claim when they need to, and the insurer pays out to cover the loss from the accumulated fund? If the fund becomes low, everyone then pays a small amount more. Or do you have a different understanding?
  • The car was the same make, model and year...

    :-/

When I look onto comparison websites, will they ask me if I've had a claim like this and will it dramatically affect the premium?

    Yes they will ask.
You need to try it and see.
I would suggest using a false email and phone number to avoid spam, but use the corrrect postcode. Even a very nearby postcode can give false results and these people tend to phone and email and not use snail mail anyway.

I made a claim in late 2009 for a idiot who hit my parked car

I haven't claimed ever since driving in 1981. I did have a small lapse in not driving for a few years and since driving in 2000 not once made a claim, but I now pay more even though I have over 9 years no claims and I have protected no claims mealy because of that idiot hit my stationary car

I agree they are not there for charity money needs to be recouped
