DFS Sofa advice please

Hi folks,

The wife and i have been looking for new sofas for a while now and recently fell in love with the Zione range in DFS.

http://www.dfs.co.uk/sofas/leather-sofas/zione/

We have today been around DFS, SCS, CSL, Harveys, and four independent sofa places and couldn't find anything at all that we liked as much as these and were any where near as comfy.

I have read the feedback on here about DFS and despite the bad reviews, there are plenty of good ones too so i'm willing to take the risk, simply because its DFS or nothing. So please don't advise "don't buy from DFS".

My questions are:

1. If we buy these sofas from DFS, what will they try and sell me as extras? Presumably some kind of leather protection / maintenance kits? Anything else?

2. Their "Double Discount" sale ends tomorrow... the range that we want currently has the 3 seater down from £1098 to £1045, single chair down from £699 to £659 and footstool down £299 to £279....

Those seem like pretty measly discounts to me considering the prices of the sofas... so does anyone have any knowledge / experience of DFS pricing to say if they think that the offers will be better / worse on these after tomorrow?

Thanks for the advice guys. :money:

theyll try and sell you care kits at bargain prices, and also insurance for them for if you spill something.

im not sure if the kits are good value or not, we're still using the ones wwe got from dfs and they certainly work. not bought any from elsewhere yet, but no doubt theyre available cheaper.

i feel like a right muppet for buyin the insurance, the salesman wore me down til i agreed. wouldnt buy it again.

be prepared for the hard sell..

sofa ok tho, cant complain there......

They'll definitely try & sell an after-care product. I just said no. Eventually they give up.
Also sold me an armchair & a footstool. The armchair I wanted. The footstool I'm not so sure.

Just decide what you want before you speak to anyone & then stand your ground.

Just a tip - if you're planning on getting credit make sure you take some ID and a utility bill or something with you. I had a long trip home when I forgot.

And as for the sale ending Sunday - don't worry a new one will start Monday (although the sofa you want may not be in it)

On the other hand it may be reduced to half price!

Ok, Ok, I know you said you don't want to hear this ....but, If you want your sofa to sag after a few days, have leather as thin as tissue paper and a sofa that lasts no more than a few years, then go for it!

Oh, and don't buy it on the 4 years credit - it will be knackered before you finish paying for it. My wife has just finished paying for a sofa we chucked out over a year ago!

They will have another Sale or Event ( same thing ) starting on Monday, their Sale is 365 days of the year.

It may pay you to wait, if you really must buy from them.

Test the three seater sofa by lifting the bottom corner - if you can lift it easily off the floor with one hand and the other end stays on the floor, walk away - it's a sign of a cheap lightweight frame.
  • Thanks again for the advice guys...

A quick google last night managed to turn up someone on a forum who had purchased the same sofa in 2008... I pm'd them to ask about it and they replied back it was the best sofa they had ever had and they would recommend it.

So my mind is kind of at ease having that kind of feedback from someone who has that actual model of sofa and real life experience of using it for at least three years.

I suggest that you take out the 5-year leather care warranty.

I bought a sofa over 2.5 years ago from DFS with this warranty.

I won't bore you with the full details but stain developed, DFS visited my property, couldn't fix stain, etc. so after escalating, they are now providing me with a completely new 3-piece suite at no extra cost to me.

I may be in the minority but DFS have been really good to me.:)
  • Would you mind me asking how much this warranty costs please?

And is leather not wipe clean anyway?

Do you live anywhere near Wiltshire?

There is a company there that sells end-of-line and overuns of G-Plan sofas and chairs.

I recently bought an armchair and large sofa in leather from there for £ 995.00

I know that it was less than £150. I would confirm in detail but my receipt is hidden away in a safe place in the loft.

I can't advise whether leather is not wipe clean anyway?

My only comment is that my leather 3-piece developed a stain, which DFS could not ultimately fix and I used the warranty as advised in my previous posting.

    My advice but your choice.
