Argos free item not in stock

Someting similar happened to me in Argos. I had purchased 3 toys on a 3 for 2 deal. 1 of the toys broke and I returned it. When the sales person realised it was bought on a 3 for 2 he insisted I had to take an exchange for another toy that would have been in the 3 for 2 range. I had over £100 worth of stuff reserved already and as their stock was so low I refused to even look. I argued and argued with this but the manager and sales assistants would not budge. Saying I'd receivied a free item therefore the item was not worth anything! I simply wanted a 3rd of the total price I paid (3 £35 items,1 item free, therefore I paid £70), £23 to use towards the other goods I bought.
I ended up leaving with no goods and going home to ring customer services. They were fantastic sorted it out no problem. The advisor I spoke to was actually avery taken a back that the store had been so difficult.
You should ring customer services and explain, tell them what a good customer you have been and that this incident has made you think twice about continuing to shop with them.

It's a two way street.

I don't understand your point. There are people on this thread who are told the free item is out of stock but they can get it when it comes back in stock. It isn't until a long time later they find out the store is never going to get any of the stock back in.

...which isn't legal.

It is annoying really isn't it? "Hey, let's put this promotion on to get people to buy this! Let's order 100 of the main item now and 50 of the free item and the rest when we can".
