It would be nice if vets were able to supply guidelines on a poster in the surgery, no-one ever seems 100% sure of the rules.

I think its clear, I just have also been advised it is wrong/endangering sometimes!

Zara has a tag that says on one side:

    Zara
    my mobile nuber
    full address with postcode

    On the other side:
    Zara
    If alone please callXXXX
    Spayed
    Chipped
    Insured

Tag is from dentitags - http://www.identitag.co.uk/Petidtag/index.htm excellent service, pretty much next day delivery, very reasonable prices and choice of designs/material

While I had a dog walker - Zara also had another tag with the dog walker details.

She is of course microchipped too.

Personally I'd not put the dogs name on ours nor recommend it.

I know that, still decided to add it to the tag when I ordered last time.
May take it off when I order the next lot, Zara seems to be loosing those on a quite regular basis....

Hi, if this was my pooch then I'd still put the harness on but would also buy a cheapie collar to wear at the same time - only attaching the lead to the harness though of course.

This is exactly what I do. I have a collar and tak I put on when we go out, it comes straight off as soon as we get in, and use a harness with the lead.

Works a treat, unless my OH's dad walks the dog, he will insist using the collar, poor pooch hates being dragged around by the neck, and who can blame him.

Just think about it, you are out and about with your dog. Your gets spooked and some how pulls away from you and legs it.

    1. Nice lady finds doggy, looks on collar sees "fido" and a phone number. Calls owners and looks afer Fido until owners arrive. Great outcome.

    2. nasty lady finds doggy, loks on collar and sees "Fido" and phone number. Ditches collar knows dogs name, keeps "Fido" Bad outcome.

No name on collar gives your dog a chance, maybe its a small chance but anythings better than nothing.

Also it good to rememebr if you are going away to put an extra tag on with moble numbers and the "I am on holiday" on the flip side.

Better safe than sorry is my motto.
    Our tag

mobile and home number. I am neutured and i need my meds daily.

    No names.
RIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Always in our hearts xxx

  • My vet advised no names, pup has a tag with

    surname
    phone no
    VETS (just the word vets)
    vets phone number

She is also chipped. I don't think I could fit the address on, as she is not only a small dog but I have a log address.
  • Funny that this should be an active topic right now. I had an old collie girl come to my garden today. No tag on her collar and no microchip, I'm going mad trying to find out where she is from! She's a lovely girl too and I am sure that someone is missing her, hopefully the fright will encourage them to get some ID on her when they get her back!

It's daft that the law doesn't ask for a phone no to be on there, but that's probably the most sensible thing to have!;) If I find a dog when i'm out and he's wearing a phone number, it's a piece of cake to ring up his owner and sort it out, whereas if he had just an address (like wot the law says :p), if he didn't live near me I'd have to ring the dog warden to come and get him.

I don't put the dog's name on my tags so i can use them for any dog in my possession - our daft lot would answer to any name if they thought there might be a biscuit in it for them :D, so there's no advantage/disadvantage to it from my POV.

Ours don't even wear collars unless they are 'in public', never mind tags ;), so if they were to decide to 'do a bunk' from the garden one day..... thank goodness for microchips!

So while the law is very clear, it's also not very sensible (surely not ;))

Ours don't wear collars at home either. Or, rather, they rarely do....we might put them on if visitors are coming or if workmen are here.

i also wonder how one deals with dogs owned by people of no fixed abode?
