Lots of varying opinions - I go along with how it's cooked, probably with all supermarket cheaper cuts.
As stated I always use a pressure cooker for 12 minutes (500g) or so and finish off either on the hob with gravy and ale or finish off in the oven.
In fact I've just cooked a small beef joint (Sainsburys) in the pressure cooker (20 mins) and finished of in the oven (further 20 mins) and it was lovely.
I fully recommend a pressure cooker (Prestige), had them for years now and couldn't be without one.

My friend also bought some diced beef from Lidl's and said the same - said it was tough and chewy. He is a very good cook so I know he cooked it correctly. He buys most of his meat from there so he was surprised that this wasn't as good as usual.

When it was on offer weeks ago I posted on here that I wouldn't buy it as I have tried slow cooking it a couple of times & we have always ended up throwing it, it is chewy, rubbery & fatty.
I thought it was just me, as when the offer was on it was like a rugby scrum in our local as everyone battled to get in the fridges carrying 4 packs out at a time:eek: it's not worth buying even on offer if you end up throwing it away!

I too bought some last weekend and it was a little drier than usual when cooked, but I think that was down to human error (mine) rather than the quality of the meat. I put it in the slow cooker, having dredged it in flour, herbs, mustard and seasoning, with a wine based stock. After the initial hour at auto I turned it down, but actually left it on for about five hours at high rather than low. It was, however, extremely tasty and I can't blame Lidl or the meat producer for my own slip-up.

the only meat product i've bought from lidl has been bacon. but i've heard from too many people that their meat isn't that nice. i use my slow cooker alot , but i'm still not conviced. i know of 3 people who bought the turkey crown from lidl and they all said it was in-eadaible for xmas was so tough had to throw away. might of been bad batch but it doesn't make you feel confidant about buying meat from there.

I was in Lidl's this week and heard a couple of people talking. Do you know the aluminium foil turkey trays they were selling? Apparently one of them was at someone's house for their Christmas dinner and cooked their turkey in one of them. When they took the turkey out of the oven they just had a hold of the tray - it wasn't inside of a roasting tray or anything - and the turkey fell clean through the disposable tray onto the floor. One person in the shop said to the other 'that would've been your turkey had it then?' The other said, 'no, we still ate it.' :rotfl:
  • Just before Christmas, I bought a joint of beef from Tesco's meat counter which was on a half price offer. I don't eat beef myself but I cook it for the rest of my family who have never, in all my years of cooking for them, complained about a roast. However, the joint from Tesco was tough, sinewy and completely inedible. My poor son was the only one who persevered with the chewing and managed to swallow some although we warned him not to. He ended up being ill later that night. I am certain that I did not overcook the meat or have the oven on too high - I am very careful because I can't afford to spoil an expensive cut of meat which is meant to last for two day's dinners.
So, on my next trip to Tesco, I informed the meat counter staff that I had been sold a tough joint of meat and what should I do?
"Did you bring it with you?" they said.
    "What?" I said.
"We would need to have a look at it," they said.
"I put it in the bin," I said.
"Then there's nothing we can do," they said.
A couple of weeks later, my husband bought two packets of sliced, cooked roast beef for sandwiches from Tesco. He said it tasted like they had taken the meat that I had chucked away back out of the bin and packaged it.
Needless to say, I won't be buying meat from them again.

I cook the lidl beef in the pressure cooker & it is fine. That is how I cook all diced beef. Softens up lovely & not chewy.
  • I always buy my meat from Lidl and I have never had a problem. I have to cook all my meat in a slow cooker now though as my oven/hobs are not working.

I bought five packs of the diced beef from Lidls when on half price sale last weekend - into hot water in pan for 15 minutes while adding onions carrots and all flavourings - then into slow cooker - off to pub for 4 hours and when home the best stewed steak ive had in years (very tender and tasty) fed 5 of us for 2 days.

So my guess is its how you cook it.
