and for those slagging Bose - get real. Probably borne out of not being able to afford it.
You can point to authoritative reviews which say that their kit is worth the £lots they charge for it? Bring 'em on!

(I do like the final sneer, though...)
  • I suppose what would suit you best will depend a lot on where you're going to use it. The BOSE does deliver a good depth of sound from such a small unit, but having previously owned one I think it's fundamentally flawed.

It's small, and sounds quite good for the size (although as others have pointed out, you can get a better sound quality elsewhere for less money). But it simply produces too much bass. I found that even on a relatively quiet volume level, the bass from the BOSE permeated the whole house. There is no method of adjusting this either.

After living with mine for a couple of years, I sold it on eBay (for a good price - they do hold their value second hand) and bought a Denon M37-DAB and a pair of Tangent EVO speakers for less money.

As for Richer Sounds - they sell some decent stuff at very good prices (this is a money saving forum right?!) although their range is limited.

I'd always recommend actually going somewhere and having a good listen to some systems if you can - any decent hifi shop will have a demo room where you can listen to a few of your CDs. There's no substitute for actually hearing something to see if you like it or not.

    Hope that helps!

TEAC, Yamaha and Denon do little 'lifestyle' systems which would be the category that the Bose falls into, have a look on the Richer Sounds website or instore (Currys or John Lewis will also have some decent stuff, along with less decent stuff), and find something that suits your budget and ears.

I recently watched a Bose Wave system demo on QVC and was amazed at the sound quality.

But if you watched it on QVC, listening to the demonstration on your own TV, can you explain how the sound quality could have been any better than that of the TV/system you currently own?

IMHO, BOSE (and I've owned some of the 'bigger' stuff like several sets of the 802's and associated bass cabs) is just overpriced garbage. Any sound system with dedicated circuitry or processing in place to deliberately equalise audio to match the weaknesses of a cheap and nasty speak driver unit should do a half decent job. A set of £30 computer speakers with a sub unit can achieve similar results to this end. BOSE pro speakers don't handle decent, unequalised RMS power - they bottom out and sound pants. You have to filter the things with a system controller - pretty much earning the tag 'no highs, no lows has to be BOSE' and it's as justified to this day as it always has been.

Mind you for those with small genitalia and low self esteem who feel the need to try and enhance their manhood with money, they are *ideal* :rotfl:
