Home or salon hair colour

  • I'm a salon girl. Coloured my hair at home from the age of 15 to 23 but I wanted to go from red to blonde so I went to the hairdressers and I've been going ever since. I have a hairdresser who I trust and I'm the kind of person who never has her hair the same way twice so much easier to get someone else to do it.
It costs me roughly $45 every 7-8 weeks which I'm quite happy paying as I have paid a lot more in the past. :)

  • I've been using Henna to colour my hair for about 25 years now, apart from the mess (which I've learned to deal with), I find this is the best for me as I react badly to quite a few chemicals (only use certain shampoos as well).

As I've short hair, one box of Henna (about a fiver on e-bay) does me for two months.

Thanks for your replies. I used to have my hair coloured at the salon but it got mighty expensive so I've been home colouring for over a year now. I use semi permanent colours as I find permanent too drying, I use the L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss and it keeps my hair in good condition. I have toyed with the idea of going back to the salon but it seems most women use home colour these days and it certainly saves money so I'll keep home colouring.

I am the same - use nice and easy and colour always fab and hair is in good condition with it - IF only - the grey didnt come through so quickly!!

Just wondering - Do you do your whole head each time or just the roots ??

My hair shoulder length now and I just whack the colour all over but now thinking would it build up and maybe should be 'trying' just to do roots >

Hi, as mine is semi permanent, I use it all over every time, but if you use permanent you might just want to touch the roots up as it can be drying used all over. You can get those root touch up kits now. Not tried one yet but they are meant to be good.
  • Bobs, I too have mid length hair and end up coluring the whole of my head instead of just the greying roots! I always panic that if I did just the roots then it may come out a different shade to the rest!

Citygirl - have to use permenant as the semi's dont cover my grey - I have thick/strong wiry hair - so maybe should try to just touch up roots!

At home, but I buy the same stuff they use in the salon anyway (from Sallys) so I get the same condition/shade I like :)
