Guilt over Meds?

Peanuckle,
Whilst I do not have the same illnesses as yourself, I have chronic illnesses which have resulted in me having to have morphine on a daily basis too.
When the doctor first had me take this I was aprehensive and, like you, thought it was meant for cancer etc. However as has been mentioned previously, your doctor would not have put you onto this medication. You should never feel guilt for having to take pain relief, more so if you have tried every possible medication before.
I am pleased your medication is easing the symptoms, make sure you monitor you medication times thoroughly ensuring that the gap is as suggested on the medical leaflet for said medication. (I apologise for using the word medication a lot in this paragraph!).
If you need to talk please send me a message and we can talk a bit better about stuff you may feel!
Keep strong and hope things improve for your family soon xxNever judge a book by it's cover!
I may look well but I am very poorly, I am fed up with being judged because I cannot work. Grrr!!
I am not looking at them, they just aint real!

Mind you, it doesn't help that I am a bit anti taking things anyway.....
I am too. Not helped by some of the awful side effects that some medication gives either.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

For my problem the doctor gave me Amitriptyline, zomorph 50mg twice a day, Oramorph 20ml @ 10/5mg every four hours, diazepam 5mg x 3 daily, senna, Paracetamol, Co-codamol 500mg 50/500. Amitriptyline made me a zombie so he moved me onto lyrica (pregabalin) instead. Pain aside I would ask to see the pain clinic at the hospital. I am morphine tolerant so need more to overcome the pain. I cannot come off it. I try and get DT's, they are bad. I collect a carrier bag of drugs each week. I see some of the other comments and I would not go onto it if given the choice again. To show how bad it can be, during the week I broke my arm ironically in hospital, in A&E they offered me Oramorph for the pain. I told them it would have to be 20ml, the doctor questioned me and I reeled off what I took every day. He blinked and said I needed help. After checking my notes he gave it me, but this followed two nurses questioning him on the amount. As far as morphine goes, users can have much higher amounts safely, but you will find it a nightmare to get off. Had I been put to a pain clinic or even better a pain consultant I would be better off I am sure.
Please heed what I have written. My meds have made me a legalised junkie. I am even going to opt for a nerve removal op to take the pain receptors/ends away. I can then work on getting off morphine/heroin.0 -

My pain meds have always been sanctioned by my pain clinician but Im still opiate tolerant and take a huge amount of pain meds per day but the pain clinic is better than a GP because they offer more expensive but better meds to me.
Do you just use oral meds?0 -

I used the two types, 12 hour slow release and liquid. Tried the pump, did not work. Mine were assessed by the clinic, but the repeat perscriptions come from the doc. Two ops have not changed anything either :-(0 -
Hi PeanuckleAfter trying a lot of different types my doctor has now given me long acting morphine and also quick acting morphine for break through pain.
I'm on both of these, plus a raft of other drugs, too.
It took me a while to get my head around having morphine, but I've done it, and I'm sure you will too.
It's meant I can function a lot more effectively than before; and the Pain Doctor I saw wouldn't have put me on it lightly, I'm certain.
Anyways, the point of my ramblings is to encourage you to ditch the guilt and get the benefit from having better pain relief without beating yourself up over it.:oIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I have bipolar disorder and i have been on meds since sept 2008 and even now i cant get my head around needing them, i go through times where i will take all my meds to the letter just as i am told to, but more often than not i will either not take them or take a reduced amount, so in effect im not helping myself but unless i am ill i dont feel i need them. But when i feel fine and mess about with taking my meds i end up ill and its a horrible circle which i hope one day i will break. Is a Bipolar bear

Firstly, Peanuckle, Huge {{{{hugs}}}
I've been on MST 35mg twice daily and Oramorph as and when required for just over two years now. Every few months or so they upped the dosage by about 5mg. I would assume by now I am opiate tolerant. Six months ago my gp referred me to a pain management clinic and a PM consultant. When we moved house 18months ago we obviously had to have a new GP and he is not a happy bunny about me being on the morphine(which is why he referred me to the clinic eventually) but as I've tried almost everything going he didn't really have much choice as to agree with my old GP and keep me on it. When I finally got an appointment with the PM consultant I was delighted. My GP is such an @rse he was a breath of fresh air! He went mental when he found out I had been on Diclofenac for 18months, a NSAID that my new GP had prescribe... apparently you shouldn't be on this for more than a month, and he said he certainly wouldn't prescribe it for more than two weeks so he immediately took me off this. As well as the morphine he also prescribed Lyrica and Tramadol. As Brassedoff put, I am a Legal junkie. However, I had to stop thinking of it as Heroin as that thought made me feel sick. It is not heroin. It is morphine. The difference being, it is taken for serious pain not enjoyment. And it is certainly not much fun being on the blinking stuff. Most of the time I am so fuzzy headed I cannot move off the sofa. Most of the time I am puking for england as Tramadol does not agree with me, however nothing else works for my pain. I despise the stuff I take, but I would much rather be throwing up and sleepy that in total agony. My consultant has told me I will probably be on morphine for the rest of my life. I am 27, but nothing can be helped. I am concerned about the long term effects it can have on my body, but I am yet to google this as I am not sure if I really want to know just yet
Sorry for waffling Pea, just hoping some of my info might help in some way? If he/she hasn't already you need to get your GP to refer you to a pain management clinic asap, they honestly do so much to help you, even if it is just to help you manage things. Mine referred me for acupuncture, which has helped a little, and a massage therapist, I am just waiting for an appointment for that but really quite looking forward to that! Even if it doesn't help with the pain it will be really relaxing! x0 -
