A friend of mine lived underneath a flat where they had installed laminate flooring.

It was noisy until he fixed a sub woofer against the ceiling, fixed a microphone to the ceiling, fed everything through an amplifier.

Every step they made was amplified and bass boosted back up to them.

The laminate was replaced with a carpet after a couple of days.

You could try that in reverse.

Oh he plays in a band.

Why did you get a flat above a restaurant if youre sensitive to noise?

Because when they moved in, it was just a restuarant, and it wasn't until later that the owner decided to run Karaoke until 4am.

"Ah, yes - just what I think when I listen to a Sinatra album; wouldn't it sound so much better rendered by a drunk Japanese businessman at 2am....."

I'd take it one step further - attach the mike to pick up the sound from the karaoke, put it thru a digital delay, then send it back to them - that'll REALLY put the 'singers' off their stride.

Or record the Karaoke, then play it back next night to the regular diners at 8 or 9pm......

Keep it simple.... go and talk to him and tell him it's really spoiling things, and that you don't want to go down official routes but you will if you have to.

If he doesn't stop, then go to the council etc as suggested above.

I'd not spend any money on anything to "get back" at him just yet.

btw, for most professions it is illegal to work 14 hour shirts, and to be back first thing in the morning after finishing late at night is also against the rules, so you really need to look into that too, being less tired would help you cope better with the problem too, I'm sure you'd agree....:)

  • Why would you expect a restaurant to be noisy after bedtime? We used to live above a chinese and never heard a peep out of them at any time of day.

    Move. End of.

The landlord is unlikely to give a toss as he'll only be interested in money, but he might wake up and listen when he struggles to let the flat out to new tenants. The restaurant owner won't give a toss either as he's only interested in his business (and, therefore, money).

If only more people understood the effects of noisy neighbours on people's lives. It is the most soul-destroying experience you could have, particularly when it stops you sleeping.

Just to add to my post. There is one thing that will work well for you if you want to get even. Buy an old CB radio or other VHF transmitter (like a ham radio system) and set the aerial up as close to the speakers of the karaoke system as you can and just 'key the mic' during karaoke hours. Hopefully his karaoke system will go up in a puff of smoke.

  • Hi guys, since I last came on asking for advice we have spoken to the owner a few more times and he told us he had no intention of stopping the music/turning it down or off earlier as he said this is when he is making his money.

As we got nowhere with him and he as started doing it almost everynight as if he is taking the mick, we got onto our landlord who contacted the council who have asked to to keep a diary of the noise and they also sent him a letter.

We were told yesterday by one of the waiting staff that he has applied for and been granted a lisence to allow him to do all this and that he had to pay £1400 for it.

Is there any way we can fight this as I can't believe they have given him a music lisence when there is a flat above him and after we had already complained about how bad it is.

I don't know what to do next I love my flat and we can't really afford to move and our contract doesn't end until November. Me moved in believeing that there would be no problems as the latest his closing hours are advertised as is half ten.

    Any ideas?
