It doesnt cost much to send some out and you also dont know at which point a firm will be recruiting and if you send a speculative cv they may keep it on file and find that in a few weeks they need another member of staff and you fit the bill.

I recommend the informational interview as a really good strategy for networking and learning about the industry when job hunting. Just my two cents.

If sending out speculative cv's and cover letters is so bad then why are next step advisors(who provide free advice at job centres) suggesting people send out spec cv's and cover letters then.
that actually tell you to cold call which I think is wrong and I know from being cold called at work before we just say , send the cv in the post or we are not looking for anyone.

In that case then maybe someone should tell the job centre then, its in my JSA agreement to phone 1 employer a week. Surely if it results in a job then thats a good thing. Ive not gone that low yet as im not desperate but i might have to at 1 point.

But that's just where you worked. Not every business works the way your employer did.
