Go with OpenOffice if you want to use a compatible program, if you have to use Word and Excel from Microsoft then purchase the program
  • Hi,

Or LibreOffice, which is what many of Open Office's developers are working on now that Oracle owns OO.

LibreOffice (LO) seems to be the more "open" fork of OpenOffice (OO), as Oracle bought Sun (who owned OO) and have upset a lot of the OO developers with their plans for world domination or something!

It's a shame neither are fully compatible with MS Office, but most common features in MS Office are available in LO and OO.

    Open office,

    Why choose OpenOffice over LibreOffice?

I understand that most of the develeopers of OO have moved to LO, but is there a particular reason to prefer OO?

If you need to view Excel documents without editing them, there is a free viewer app available from Microsoft.

MS Works seems to be bundled on some new Win7 Netbooks / Laptops. Do you have MS Works on your machine? It has a reasonable Ad-supported Spreadsheet and Document editor that is free to use and no expiry (apparently).

Of course if you're a student, you can get MS Office Pro from software4students for less than £40.
