  • Yesterday was my first interview in over a month, 130 mile round trip to get the no vote! I have a few more applications to submit and a few more agencies to pester (whilst I can still afford to pay my broadband bill).
Onwards and upwards all of us and we will find something eventually.

  • Afternoon all, in a few recent posts, there have been suggestions about uploading your cv to sites like myjobsite, which on the whole is a positive move. Does anyone have any tips on how to really make your cv stand out from the crowd?
I emailed my cv to a cv reviewing and rewriting service (free initial response then the charges for the service were astronomical). the tips were good, but advised a total rewrite of my cv! I obviously will do this if necessary, but would welcome ideas on how others have fared. Selling myself has always been a bit of an issue for me, and am determined to get over it now.

I've completely re-modelled my CV and have been lucky to know someone who does it for a living - thus passing me their knowledge for free!

Feel free to send me yours and I can have a look at it if you need some help.

Have any of you folks tried Jobsite? Made a huge difference to me. If you upload your CV onto their site, and then make it available to recruitment agencies, they then start ringing you. In today's highly competitive job scene it's a numbers game, and trying to contact companies individually, especially if they are not even advertising, leaves you with very unfavourable odds. For me this was one of the key job hunting changes that helped me eventually find a job ... took me months before finally deciding to do it.

My CV problem was sitting down and bringing it up to date for my course, once I had the certificates and could outline the dates and grades and make it crystal clear I'd graduated. Until then it looked like there was an unexplained three-year gap of just temping. Also if agencies just wanted you like that, then you're the lucky one and congrats on your job, but there wouldn't be at least one agency this week advertising openly just for a sign-up trawl if it was the same for everybody.

Rant edited, moved on to one of the other good roles that came up today rather than the ad that wound me up with its ageist language.

If I do it'll be the last of the new batch and I won't spend as much time with it, it can be this week's spec app.

I've had to resort to sending out speculative CV's via email due to not being able to apply for a job in almost a month now, I have to up my game, its clear jobs aren't going to appear on the job market, Sent out 4, 2 replied with the standard thanks for enquiring but nothing available and the other 2 I've heard nothing from, wonder what sort of success rate sending out random CV's get? Its almost my last option, last option being working for free as a trial and I am really considering it.

The thing with spec CVs is you have to follow them all the way through if you get anything less than a "no". I applied on spec to a retail chain years ago, the only other one where I'd want to work as the other two in my career were pretty rubbish. Was put on file no bother, very profressional and didn't give it another thought.

2-3 years later, they advertised for Christmas temps and when I applied they responded quick sharp. Mistake of the century, I cancelled my application as I'd found another temp post that paid more. Of course I couldn't predict that this retailer would go on to open a new branch near me and I would have had a Christmas of working at a different store under my belt even if I'd missed the initial hiring.

So now I have to spec them again just saying that I've graduated and please keep me on file again, and hope they don't have a black mark against people that cancel!

They all replied with the usual we'll keep it on file, the thing is I have never saw any of these companies hiring and i've watched them for years.
