I registered last week to do the ECDL course. This was set up at my last Next Step session, and I'm doing it through my local LearnDirect centre. Might as well since it's free and may keep my brain ticking over...

I was feeling so positive and happy.

Just back from the job centre.

She's changed my three job options to shop work, cleaning and customer service.

She told me I have no chance of getting any of the jobs I am applying for.

She told me to dumb down my CV. To take my degree off it.

Why did I go to university? Why did I spend all those nights unable to sleep for thinking about exams? Why did I spent time stressing about essays and placements?

    What was the point?

I've considered whether taking my degree off would help me get a job. But then I'd have to explain the gap in my CV!

lexi the type of jobs that I'm starting to apply for are not what I really want to do but needs must at the minute. Keep applying for the jobs that you want to do as well! If you really don't want to remove your degree then don't!

(look I gave you my 400th post!)

That is exactly what I said. She pretty much told me to think up something that would explain it, lie basically!

The thing is, I've been applying for shop work and stuff like that, it's not that which bothers me. It's that they have taken the things off the list that I want them to be searching for. I can find shop vacancies and cleaning vacancies myself.

Psychology is a really difficult sector to get into... Do you look on the NHS job website by any chance? There was Assistant Psychologist job going in Bath but that's gone now (it was up for less than a day). It's ridiculous, I wasn't even looking for myself, it was for a friend, though I only told her a few hours ago, I doubt she was able to get an application in on time.

What about graduate schemes? I know it doesn't help right now, but it might help in the future plus career prospects would be improved.
  • Lexilex, I'm also having to apply for jobs which I don't really want to do. I'm an administrator and office manager but the ads for these jobs are all asking for a degree nowadays, or an NVQ in Business Administration and I have neither.

I've now started applying for admin assistant, data entry and supermarket jobs (not much chance of getting a supermarket job, I reckon hundreds are chasing after each vacancy) with a dumbed down CV. I'm still getting nowhere.

On a more positive note, there may be something promising for hubby, not completely ideal as it would be a sizeable step down and is in the industry he was made redundant from and didn't really want to go back to but it's in Leeds (easy commute, half hour bus journey) and he'd be able to do the job with his eyes shut. They heard he was good from someone who now works there but used to work with hubby and they contacted him for a chat. They've since contacted him again and it does look promising. Fingers crossed! If he gets it, an enormous amount of pressure will be lifted!

I've applied for graduate schemes but hear nothing. Assistant Psychology vacancies, or similar, are really rare up here. I think there have been two since I graduated. I would love one of these roles, but I know I have no chance whatsoever. I've been applying for anything even slightly linked to what I studied such as teaching assistants (I spent time on placement in two schools), anything to do with employment or learning disabilities.

It just upsets me so much that all mark hard work was for nothing.

I had to stop myself at least three times from crying at the job centre.
  • I nearly cried on the phone to a recruiter yesterday - you're not alone in it reducing you to tears :(
