How far back do you lot go on applications when it comes to past employment? I'm only 24 so have had 9 years of working since leaving school. In that time I've had 9 jobs which is quite a lot, although several only lasted for a short time and 2 of them I was working a the same time as they were both casual. Of those jobs 5 are related to working with children so I've been going back and covering all 9 years work on posts related to that profession.

It's when I come to apply for Admin posts that I'm not sure whether I should still cover all 9 years as I only have 2 posts related to Admin that I did one after the other and didn't start til 2005.

Well tailor each CV to the job you're applying. Put 2 lots of employment history down - top one for the type of job you're going for and a 2nd lot with the non related jobs. This is what I did when I first started in TV.

I use a website where employers view me - industry specific though, and had quite a few phone calls from it.

It's my first day at my new 1 week job tomorrow... bit nervous as I'm use to working in smaller production offices, not a huge company with about 40 or more floors! Gonna have a good view of London - if I have a window lol
  • I registered for the free CV review the other day but I never heard anything back about it. Did they phone you or e mail you?

They phoned me, I can't remember if it was the day after or a couple of days after - but the lady who called was really helpful, gave me some really good tips. :) they do push the full service at the end but you can just say "not now, I'll think about it, but thank you" and they're fine.

I was just wondering if you all allow employers to search for your CV? I have noticed this option on several websites and don't know if this is worth doing. Also if you do, do you remove all your personal details first?
I am registered on a few job websites and I have allowed recruiters/employers to search for me. I have made my details public, although before I was made redundant, I had them private. No one has ever approached me though.

I was actually gonna post a question today asking if anyone had actually been approached by an employer through doing this cos to me it seems to have been a waste of time so far.

I have! :) I think it's worth doing if you're prepared to put yourself out there. I've had 2 phone calls from the types of agencies who put those "NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!" ads online, which I don't trust.
I had 1 phone call from an agency who were looking for someone who wanted to work in retail / sales (I don't, but it just happened my skill set suited them). Also had 1 call from a newb at one of the local agencies who didn't realise I was already registered with them but she was keen to sign me up because of my experience, lol.
1 call from another agency who put me forward for a job in broadcasting because of my education (they got me an interview! still waiting for the results, but I've had a job offer I've taken since then anyway).
Aaaand I also had a call from a local company who were looking for a freelancer with particular skills. We met up and I got a part time job out of that and a couple of really good contacts for the future. :)

In my experience it's worth doing - if you get even 1 or 2 calls then you'll know your CV is working to grab attention. :P

A new week, a new start. Let's hope we all find jobs this week! :T

The agency put my CV forward for a temporary role on Thursday, so I'm hoping to hear something soon, even if it's a no. I asked them to keep me updated either way and I'd just like to get an idea of where my CV is fitting in in the current market.

Btw, does anyone know when JSA is paid in relation to your signing on day? Thanks in advance. :)

I'm hoping this week will be my week! I have a second interview on Wednesday and I've been swotting up all weekend! I have all my fingers and toes crossed for this one... I'm actually pretty proud that I'm even getting a second interview, I hope I don't blow it! EEK!

I hope everyone has a good week, more good news and more progress! Best wishes to everyone here! :T

I did and I ended up getting a 3 week temp contract with Knight Frank! :D

I think it would be in your best interests to make it public, I've had a few phone calls because recruiters/company's have seen my full details.

    Good morning all.

First application of the day done and it's not even 8.30

The sun is out and I am feeling positive. I think I have got over my shock at last week now, and I have just got to get on with it. I still cannot believe I've gone from having 2 job offers to none, but what's meant to be will be.

Just a tip for anyone who is looking to work in a school. On Thursday I emailed every school in the local city (local council had a list with email addresses on their website). I explained I was looking for work as a teaching assistant, and had heard many vacancies go unadvertised and I did not want to miss out on a opportunity. I am surprised how many have actually bothered to reply. Although none of them have asked me to run round there and start working :o I would say the majority have said they will keep a copy of my CV on record should vacancies arise. A lot have explained they are struggling because of tight budgets. My thoughts are that if they already have a potential applicant saved in their records they may choose to contact me if a position becomes available, rather than waste time and money with the whole advertising process.

Anyway, good luck everyone with interviews this week. I'm hoping for great things this week.

Good morning and good luck this week everyone :)

Sign on day today then have to be ready for possible interview this afternoon. Have been put forward for twelve roles via recruiters so will concentrate on these this week, plus a tailored CV I promised a recruiter two weeks ago I have been struggling with.
Also need to sort my CVs out as many were produced in last weeks frenzy!

Really hope I get some good news and interviews for the really exciting jobs, it is about time?
