Boy's school trousers to fit 'chunky' thighs.

Can anyone help recommend a shop/brand of school trousers. I'm struggling with my (nearly) 11yo and school trousers. The problem is that his thighs are chunky, so when trousers fit at the waist, they are too skin-tight round the tops of his legs. I've just returned a pair of age 12 to sainsbury's for a pair of age 13, and await him coming home to see if this size fit. He is 4ft 11.

  • My son sounds similar shape to yours. I buy him 'Plus size' from NEXT and as they have adjustable waist I can pull them in tight at the waist and turn up the length. I still have to add one year onto his age though so I'd suggest trying 12 plus for your son. They are more expensive than supermarket school trousers but they are hardwearing and wash well. x

BHS do a "generous" range and I've also seen some on ebay.

My son used to have a similiar problem, but he is tall with a chunky waist and skinny legs! Thankfully he now fits an average age 16 just perfectly - length and waist, even though he is only 12!
  • BHS stock a "generous fit" range of schoolwear. The trousers have a half elasticated waist so should fit around the waist, but allow for a bigger build.

I haven't tried this range myself, but have bought their schoolwear and found it to be quite good quality.

My daughter has the same problem,we got trousers from M and S, i think in this day and age, kids clothes should be all in measurements, not ages, and go up to generous sizes.

Thanks for the help everyone! The age 13 trousers didn't fit so are going back. Though they were slightly better round the thighs, at this age they aren't elasticated so didn't fit round the waist. For that reason I don't think I'll bother trying age 14.

I was aware of bhs generous fit, I spent some time over the xmas hols going thru their rails looking, but the ones that I thought would fit round the waist/thighs were in too young an age size (so too short), and the age 12+ they didd't have in generous fit! I realise it's the wrong time of year to look for school uniform. I wasn't aware Next did a plus size though so that's def somewhere I'll try. I want him to try some on in a shop before I order online cos at the minute I'm not even sure of what size to get.

The person who gave me the additions link, do you know if the elasticated waists stop at a certain size?

The m & s ones, are they their standard range, or do they say 'generous fit' too? Our m & s is small (and rubbish) but I could get to a larger store if need be.

I've had the same problem for my son.... I go to BHS and by "older" trousers in the generous fit. They need adjusting on the waist but first I shorten them and then I use the bit I cut off to make the "sleeve" on the waist and fit a button and some of that elastic with the button holes in that you often get on younger children's trousers. Are you "handy" at sewing?

ok ok - my mum does it for me!:o

I'm not sure if M and S says generous fit, my daughter got a womens size. Next do a generous fit, i just think its a shame, if a kid doesnt fit into their age group clothes, they immediately start having hangups about clothes not fitting, and makes the matter worse, i saw a poor lad crying in M and S cos he couldnt get trousers to fit.
  • I get my son's from my local uniform shop and they are by made by Innovations. You can buy them online if you search Changes - Childrens Uniforms and Fashions . Not used this site, as I get them from the local shop and there may be many places that you can get them online, but this was just an initial search.
In my experience they are very good quality material and last for ages - much better then any high street brands.

    eg.
