Any tips for Chichester please?

Just wondered if anyone has been to Chichester and has any tips on good places to eat and any "hidden gems" that must be visited please? Likewise, anything to be avoided?!!
It's a long weekend away in February.
No particular pubs/restaurants have stood out so far from reviews I've found.
With 3 days and nights the plan is to go to Fishborne Palace and of course the Cathedral, explore the town, hopefully the coast and the South Downs. Driving around is an option. Skipping Arundel this time as that will take up an entire day, presumably.
Huge thanks in advance for replying.

Hi
Pallant house gallery in the centre of town usually have good exhibitions on. Chi Festival theatre is lovely if anything good is on your weekend. Also if you fancy the beach then visit West Witterings and also south weald museum is good too.My hubby and I went to uni in Chichester and still love going back there. The town and shops are very good and will take a lot of your time I am sure. Can't recommend anywhere to stay as have never done that and many of the pubs have now changed sice I used to visit them. have a lovely time.;)0 -
Hiya
*Cathedral, as already mentioned, however I really would suggest Arundel Cathedral, there is just more to it- equally Arundel would be an ideal place to spend a day. You have both cathedral, castle, a lovely lake to walk around, the Wildlands and Wetlands Trust, and it is just a nice place to walk around- although very hilly.
*Portsmouth is just 20-25 minutes on the train, and right by the train station in portsmouth is the Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays (a shopping centre full of Outlet shops) and also HMS victory.
*I struggle to think of things to do in Chichester itself, there are plenty of nice places to eat, although many are chain restaurants (Slug and Lettuce, Zizzi) there are a few nice restaurants.
*So basically what I would suggest is one day in Arundel, one day in Portsmouth and one afternoon in Chichester...0 -
I would agree with the last post there is little to do in Chichester IMHO. Arundel is nice, make sure you visit the black rabbit pub oh and the castle is a MUST. My friend has a new cafe call Gasskins so keep an eye out for that, its near the bridge as you enter the town :-)
Portsmouth is ok, you want the harbour ( Gunwalf) the spinnaker tower if pretty cool and there are lots of shops too, nothing individula its an out of town kinda comeplex but could be a good day out.
Maybe one day you could have a drive round the south downs and have a pub lunch? There is a nice pub at Washington called the Franklins or at Patching (clapham) the worlds end or if you want the best food then the fox at patching or clapahm I never knwo which it is...
The white horse at Maple hurts does the best chilli if u make it up that far but its a very local pub.
Enjoy. xxDebt free and plan on staying that way!!!!0 -
The Black Rabbit in Arundel just down the A27 Eastbound from Chichester is fantastic, good food, good views and nice friendly service.
Bosham area is nice for a walk
Again Gun Wharf quays for some retail therapy - its an outlet style place and has some nice restaurants but are mainly chain ones ie la tasca etc
I wouldnt bother with Littlehampton or Bognor Regis, they are just typical seaside resorts and not much to do in the winter, just a stroll along the beach really.
I recommend Arundel - the castle is nice and lots of nice walks.0 -

A few years ago we went to a good show at the South Downs Planetarium in Chichester.

Just joined and saw your post.. I live in Waterlooville; just mear Portsmouth and not too far from Chichester. Gunwharf has been suggusted; it is worth a visit if you can't find anything else to do. HMS Warrior as well as the Dockyard are nextdoor; The Spiniker Tower is worth a trip up; It's one of those things you have to do just the once.
My honest opion on shopping !! "Southampton" there I've said it...
Other places to visit; next to the water and for a pub lunch is "Bosham"; not too far from Chichester; there is a small in-door arcade.. ( but make sure you park in the Car park; as some people have tried to park near the waters edge !!; if you go in the pub; you will see photo's of cars underwater, when the owners have returned ) Anyway; guess you will "Google" places anyway.
southsea, near portsmouth has a Pier, Royal Marines Museum; There is always the Hovercraft so you can pop over to the Isle of Wight..
hope I have helped rather than hindered !!

The Black Rabbit at Arundel is very nice but I've heard very good things about Pappardelle, Italian restaurant, in the High Street, which is open for lunch and evening meals.
North of Chichester you've got the Earl of March Pub and you could always go up the Trundle for stunning views. There is also West Dean Gardens which is open all year.
Enjoy!

Anyone with a bus pass (although you can buy a day ticket etc.) should take a look at the above link.
The coastliner 700 service runs from Portsmouth all the way along the south coast calling at all the resorts, including Chichester, to Brighton every half hour.0 -
We have some lovely restaurants here in Chichester - #12 has already been mentioned but I should point out that it's a bar/restaurant. El Castizo does fabulous Tapas and there is also the Dining Rooms (maybe a bit pricy). Earl of March is wonderful (just out of town in Lavant with lovely views of the downs) - also a bit pricy but well worth it . Confucious is a great Chinese and we have 2 new Thai restaurants opened up in St Pancras which is where The Nags is (lovely Carvery).
Location wise, we are 10 mins away from 2 Horserace courses (Goodwood & Fontwell) - also at Goodwood is the famous race track so check the calendars to see if any events are being help during your trip.Thank you all who post.0
