Thanks for everyone for being so frank.

Seller has full service record...would you guys still suggest i take it in to a garage for a full diagnostic or just save and wait till MOT is due?

I purchased the car last week, its a 2005 but only got 6 month warranty on it..

Say no to the extended warranty, take the car RIGHT NOW (ok soon) and get it checked over for faults.

If it had fresh MOT on it, then the garage probably played the old trick of passing it without checking it properly. Illegal as hell, but you wouldn't find out until a year later (when the warranty has run out) and you'd never be able to prove a damn thing by then.

I could say that buildings insurance is a "rip off" because I've paid thousands over the decades yet never received a penny back.

Ever heard of a buildings insurance claim being turned down because "the fire started in the kitchen and ruined the whole house, but we'll only pay for the part of the kitchen it started in" ?

Well ... A friend's buildings insurers refused to pay for the building work required to access pipes which had frozen and burst. They paid for the pipes to be repaired but not for the access and making good.

Back to car warranties - a GOOD warranty will include consequential damage, even by an uninsured part. So if an uninsured part (such as a belt) fails and causes damage to an insured part (such as the camshaft) then the insured part will be replaced under the policy. A Poor warranty won't cover it.
