How about cheese pudding - breadrumbs, grated cheese, grated onion if you have onions. Mix egg with some milk, salt and pepper pour over breadcrumbs and grated cheese in greased casserole dish, bake in oven 30 mins - at about 190-200 degrees, serve with peas or any other veg. I have seen me putting some chopped bacon in this too. Cheap and easy!

I remember this from when I was at school - I used to go to my Auntie's for tea on a Wednesday and we always had this and I loved it! She used to separate the eggs and fold in the whipped egg whites before putting it in the oven. I think I will make this again - had totally forgotten about it so thanks!

OP you sound really motivated so I'm sure that you'll be fine - if you do find any money in jars etc then Farmfoods are really cheap IMO - they had HUGE bags of onions and big bags of potatoes for 69p when I went yesterday and the quality looked okay. They also had frozen oven chips for £1 - it was a massive 2kg bag - not the most nutritious but okay for emergencies! Good luck!

I tried this at the weekend and can confirm it is amazing!!!! The kids have really enjoyed us sitting down and trying to get our heads together about what food to eat. We managed to find some bits of chocolates and the twins made rice crispy cakes, although they ate more than they made into cakes :).

We had a dance central evening with the big kids which they loved.

I've looked on all the threads and found some good tips about diluting things down so think this will stretch our washing up liq, wash powder etc. Also decided to start potty training the twins so we could stretch the nappies out that we had already, very messy but we are persevering lol.

I can't thank you all enough and think that the comments you find time to make are great and really do help lighten the load for so many of us that are struggling, I wish everyone in our communities was as switched on as you lot xx
  • If you don't live near a Farmfoods you can get 2.5kg of basic potatoes from Sainsburys. They're fine but odd shapes which doesn't matter once you cook them. They say 'good for mashing' on the bag but I use them for chips, wedges, roasties, etc.

You could make a stew with your few bits of stewing steak, beans, stock and any little bits of veg you have knocking about? Serve it with some bread and butter to stretch it further.

When I was little we used to have a meal called "If Its" at the end of the month. It was called If Its because If it smells good eat it was the idea. So my Mum would pull all the odds and sods out of the fridge and we'd get lots of little different bits on our plate. I was a weird kid though so I had to have mine in seperate bowls so they didn't touch! This might not work with your twins being so little!

my mum went through an odd vegetarian phase, omg she made some bizaare meals, lol. but when i was little one thing she use to make for me when a) money was tight and b) when she was on her veggie phase was making a load of pancakes( just normal ones flour, eggs, milk ) the when cool she would fill with some baked beans for me, roll up and put in an oven dish and put a bit of grated cheese on top and bake till cheese melted and golden. oh they were delish. i loved them and still do. even when mum moved away from her veggie phase she still made them for me.

she used to fill them with all sorts for her and dad, they are so versitile. i made them for my hubby using chicken, mushrooms and beansprouts. very scrummy indeed. chilli con carne works very well also.

Dont know if this been said but you dont always need to add washing powder to every wash - ive forgotton (sometimes on purpose lol) and not put the powder/ tab in as the machine seems to retain a certain amount of soap anyway
