Flour (Plain & Self Raising) - How much?
About 250g butter - any other oil or margarine?
    Milk - how much
    Eggs (8)
Leftover bits of cheese from xmas - consider freezing any you are not going to use very quickly
    crackers
3 loaves bread - amongst other things either bread and butter pudding or a savory B&B pudding with some of the cheese.
4 frozen burgers (looks like raw mince burgers)
    sml pack mince
carton passata - your might need to use this for two dishes
    tin of beans
    mushy peas
potatoes (new and 4 x jackets)
Enough fruit and biscuits for packed lunches
    fishfingers
    frozen veg (peas/sweetcorn)
some random bits of frozen fish - make white sauce and cover with mashed potato. Perhaps add a bit of sweetcorn
    yorkshire pudding batter
stewing steak (only about 10 cubes) - either slice finely and use in some sort of stir fry or mix with sliced potato and make Cornish pasties.
    gravy granules

I have herbs and spices that I use all the time. I'm quite lucky as my mum brought us round a bag full of random food she had knocking around (good old mum!!!).

You could really do with some pasta if possible, and maybe some onion. Raid all the old coats and jackets and check down the back of the sofa etc.

    Fish pie with the bits
Make Mock sausages or just cut the burgers up and use batter for a toad in the hole.
Bread and butter pudding - sweet or savoury
Mince and tatties or pasta and bolgnaise sauce
    Beef stir fry or pasties
fish fingers and mushy peas - with potatoes in some form

Yopu could probably put up a quiche or spanish omelette or egg and (bacon) pie as well.

Soups: cheese, veggie, potato and veggie

Also check out what we used to call eggy bread. take a jam sarnie, cut into four little wedges, soak in beaten egg with a little milk and fry in butter. Sift suger over the top and one dessert.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

I've just had a look at this, what an amazing organisation!!!!

Well have taken all your suggestions and putting together a meal plan to make sure I use everything wisely!!! I also forgot I have a stash of change in a bottle that I will count up later for emergencies so thankyou for reminding me!

It's amazing what people can come up with, I was panicking this morning and there really was no need. I have to last till a week on Monday and I now feel like this is do-able. Also found a big box of cereal and some porridge so thats breakfasts covered!! Thank you all x

Hi its never as dire as it seems so surprising what you can make from what you have.

    Not exactly gourmet but

    fishfingers,potatoes and mushy peas.

frozen fish- most are cook from frozen a typical fillet takes approzx half hour to bake.
    place in baking tray
    pour over passata
A little oil or butter even.
bake at 200 for about 15mins.
then add grated cheese and dried herbs.
bake for another 15-20mins until soft and you have fish in lovley cheesy/tomato sauce.-serve with new potaoes and veg.

Mince-fry up with onion and garlic if you have any until golden brown, could add few dried herbs too.
    cover in gravy.
throw in some peas and swetcorn from freezer too
top with mashed potato and bake to make shepards pie

bake for approx 30-35mins-to make extra sepcial last 10mins chick some grated cheese on top.

beans on toast or add beans and cheese to jackets but you 2jackets short.

    Cook the stewing steak
mix the batter mix make as many yorkie puds as you can.
Then once both cooked fill the inside if the yorkie with some of the cooked steak..Pour over some gravy from the granules
serve with potatos if you have any left and frozen peas/swetcorn.

    Whats going in everyones sandwiches-chese

    4jacket potatos with cheese.

burgers sandwich I guess be ideal if had chips to go with it.

omlette with cheese if you can make more intesting by adding chopped tomatos or ham too.

if you have enough potoes, milk, butter, cheese you could do fish pie with the frozen fish .

If you can raise some spare cash would be good.

lilds are really cheap for bag of onions
got largish bag of potatoes in there for 95p
got some cherry tomatoes on offer for 49p great for lunch boxes too.
The passata is only 45p in lids and tinned tomatoes about 25-30p.
    milks quid for 4pints.
    pasta 50p

farmfoods best for milk though as 8pints for 1.50.
farmfoods, icelands or most supermarket own brands will do small bag oven chips around quid handy for going with the omlette or the burgers.

not sure you got co-op near you but their evening reductions and sundays good day always great.Fidn them the most generous with reductiosn but others on her found fab woopsoies late at night in their local tesco/morrisions

    Think other useful additions be.

    some cheap squash
    tea or coffee/basics brand
    sugar.

    rice

    pasta

some more butter-I got cant belive its not butter today 500g sainsburys on offer at 65p.

I buy value mouse in sainsburys think its 31p for 4
    value fromage frais-45p for 6.
golden syrup-reason I suggest is you have porridge oats, butter, sugar and flour you can make the famous twinks hobnobs or flapjacks even.

    onion
    garlic

stock of some sort value stuff less than 20p a pack.think sainsburys basic 10 just thinking boil up the rice in water with stock.
stir in some frozen veg or chopped ham and you got tasty savoury rice.

some tuna might add intrest to sandwiches or jackets.
my daughter likes tuna and sweetcorn.

I have been in sitiation of feeding family of 3 in lids for fiver one week itc ould be done but have learnt last year to keep full store cupboard so ensure you always have eneough

    sugar
    flour
    eggs
    cheese
    butter
    pasta
tinned tomatoes- I buy loads of value
chilli-we like spiceyt so always have chilli in house.
    onions
    garlic
    stock cubes
    gravy granules
    potatoes
frozen veg such a useful standy as if you had broccoli or cauli you could have done cauliflour cheese.
    passata-ideal for making pasta sauces.
rissoto rice- rissoto so easy to make as rissoto rice and stock with lots of whatever you want chucked in.
    normal rice

if you had some tinned tomatoes and some curry powder you could make veg curry from potatos, frozen cauli, onion and whatever frozen veg you can chuck in with rice.I buy basics naans and keep in freezer for the odd curry night.

Another great cheapy meal is my homemade hot salsa.-you could serve it cold
chop onion, garlic, chilli and chopped tomatos up and fry in little oil for few mis the add dried coriander or fresh and stir for a min, add chopped tinned tomatoes, litle salt and pepper and simmer for 10-15mins on low heat and serve on boil grated cheese and value nachos.

    Good luck.

  • I vote also for putting a pound towards a bag of pasta, the cheapest pasta available. It makes for a relatively filling, if not entirely nutritious meal. Pasta and cheese sauce. Or tomato based. Pasta bake.

Between pasta, rice and potato dishes, they work out at not much money per portion, fill you up quickly, and go a long way...

As well as getting some pasta, you could get rice (73p kilo) and curry sauce (9p jar) from mrS. I imagine you might have to add some spices to the sauce but you can throw in any random bits of veg, potato, meat and get two dinners worth for the whole family. Those 10 little cubes of beef will go much further with a diced potato and handful or two of frozen veg in a curry sauce or a stew with dumplings(flour, butter & herbs).

Have you ever used milk&more? If not you could get a free £5 delivery early next week, that could be 5 pints of milk and 6 eggs? http://www.milkandmore.co.uk/landing/mobile_offer.htm

How about cheese pudding - breadrumbs, grated cheese, grated onion if you have onions. Mix egg with some milk, salt and pepper pour over breadcrumbs and grated cheese in greased casserole dish, bake in oven 30 mins - at about 190-200 degrees, serve with peas or any other veg. I have seen me putting some chopped bacon in this too. Cheap and easy!

  • Thankyou all for your replies. Tried the milk and more but they are not in our area. Also found a pack of pasta in the back of a cupboard and some chicken fillet strips in the freezer so I'm thinking of more possibilities now!!!

Also been asking friends what I can do with my 2yr old twins for free and they have come up with some great ideas so I'm hoping we still manage to have a good week!!
