  • flippin heck that sounds like hard work to me. I hate rubbing stuff down. (unless there's a few burly firemen out there who need rubbing down!)

Is there any kind of boarding out there that could be fixed to my 2.4m x 2.4m bathroom ceiling and just painted over or better still doesn't need painting??

Messy this, but I recommend buying a £15 sander from Wickes and a large container of "plaster skim" for around £5. That's ready mixed finishing plaster in a tub. Also buy a plastering trowel.
Whack the skim onto the ceiling any old how. Let it set. Then sand it as smooth as you can.
Repeat a number of times, filling in the low patches each time.

Makes hell of a mess but you can get a smooth ceiling this way.

Other option is to rip the whole lot down, nail up some plasterboard and pay a plasterer to skim it for you.

  • My MIL used the Smoothover stuff to do a wall in her kitchen and it was totally fine - until she was telling me about it and I went to run my hand over the finish only to find it was still wet! OOPS! I didnt find it quite so easy to fill in the fingerprints I had made!!!!

i use the smoothover stuff all the time to fill any cracks/holes in plaster prior to decorating. I find it saves a lot of time with prep. Would never use it to 'skim' a wall though

When you see the TV advert & how easily they use it, you just know it isn't going to work like that.

The amount of times ive been to look at jobs recently, one yesterday as it goes [im a plasterer by trade] and the customer has used this polycell filler or similiar, then paid a plasterer such as my self to come and repair and re-do the work, im not a great fan of the stuff at all, maybe im biast, but i think it is a false economy using it as ive seen customers fill cracks in an entire room and spent the whole weekend preparing it and applying and still getting a lousy finish, when the could have got a plasterer to just come and re-skim the walls for a couple of hundered quid for a decent finish.

i've just covered my bathroom roof with ribbed plastic sheets. They are cheap and easy to fit, they are tongue and groove. Stick up some batons across the roof then attach the sheets with panel pins then you stick up a trim round the edges and your done!!

    super easy!!
