I am attempting to use polycell smoothover to cover my slightly textued bathroom ceiling and so far th results are rubbish.
I can't seem to get a decent even finish. In fact it looks worse than the original textured finish. Anyone else used it to bette effect?
Wished I just paid a plaster to skim over it.
I HATE DIY.
(There, rant over!)

There are many posts on this subject on here, everyone hates the stuff!
It does exactly what it says on the tin- well not quite lol0 -
Can't believe I didn't do a search before buying this tripe. I totally pigged off now. Is it too early to open a beer?Twins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0

I was that miffed with the result achieved with this not so smoothover that I took it back to the shop and got my money back. At least I've got £30 towards paying a plasterer now!!!Twins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0

I used that rubbish too and decided to go ahead and do a botch job by painting on the uneven walls!! I obviously need to do it again, but properly this time. I'm not sure what to do......get a plasterer to re-skim or put up a lightly textured wallpaper and paint over that. As I'm pretty poor at DIY, I would need to get a decorator or a plasterer. Any ideas what would be cheaper?Nothing can compareTo when you roll the dice and swear your love's for me0

Cheers! Maybe if I had a beer before I tried to use the smoothover I'd have done a better job!Twins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0 -

Cheaper in the long run to get it plastered, then you only need to paint it. Wallpaper over an uneven surface often looks dodgy anyway, at least it will look good once it's plastered (unlike most people! )0 -
I've recently been using smoothover to cover some textured walls the trick to get the best results is to first rub down the surface you want to cover. There must be no sharp edges left.
Apply smoothover, rub down again, apply further coating of smoothover, you may need to rub down again depending on the results achieved.
Application of paint to the surface can be slightly problematic I found a coating of Crown's Basecoat followed by a thicker matt white paint (unbranded) gave the desired resul from which you can if you want apply any other colour.
It is certainly cheaper if you have patience and time and of course should be used with cautiuon if there is suspicion that the surface you are rubbing down contains asbestos.0
