IE 9 will only run on Vista/Win7 (Not XP and never will apparently)
The release candidate is now available here

It installs over previous versions (takes a while and reboot required)
Tried it for a day or so and found it a vast improvement over IE8 although the buttons & menu bars have moved. Larger screen for browser thanks to minimal menus.
Suggest you create a restore point if you want to go back because IE 9 will not run in tandem with IE 8. It is treated like a Windows Update to remove but I am unsure whether IE 8 will be reinstated.
Very good review article here although dunno how unbiased it is

if it's same as removing IE8, then yes it will revert to 8 when you remove 9. Removing 8 reverts to 7 (as long as you had 7 installed previously). The fact that you have to remove it as an update would also point to this.
I run XP, so can't physically check.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

This is correct! I've just uninstalled ie9 and it reverts back to 8:
Open the Windows Vista’s Control Panel > Click the ‘Uninstall a Program’ option from ‘Programs’" > Look in the Tasks panel and choose the ‘View Installed Updates’ > When the Updates List is displayed, you need to look for the Internet Explorer 9, to uninstall it you have to double click it.Then you will be prompted to restart > all done0 -
You could try ALT+H,should show you what version you have!Norn Iron Club Member 4560
