Do you need to SORN when you scrap it?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but Sorn is for when the vehicle is untaxed, ie when tax is due you either pay for the tax.or sorn the vehicle.
If you need to take the motor off the rd whilst the tax is in effect, you apply for a refund of remaining tax and declare Sorn then.

If you have sent off the paperwork, then its not your problem.
The reminder slip says what to do if you no longer own the vehicle.
I have never had any problems with them over this type of issue.

DVLA however, all too often think otherwise - inevitably in circumstances where paperwork has gone adrift at their end. I wouldn't rely on them to plait three lengths of string and I certainly wouldn't put too much faith in anything I was told by them over the phone. DVLA are operated by Capita and there are those who would argue that they have thoroughly earned their nickname "Crapita"
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

Yep but declaring Sorn just as the car is being dragged onto a car transporter, would not affect the question over the tax issue, it would still take a couple of weeks to go thru the system.

So you would still be in the position as the OP is in now worrying over getting tax demands.

In hindsight (wonderful thing i know) OP should have declared sorn as soon as car died.

  • Ah yes hindsights a wonderful thing.. however it was still parked on a public road and still needed tax. as for the refund, i thought you could only ask for a refund on FULL months.. it matters not, you make a good point about it taking just as long for a sorn to go through the system as change of owner.. so it looks like im going to find out if the dvla were correct in telling me i wont be fined
  • How could you possibly declare someone elses car of the road,
you sold it on the 9th so therefore you can not sorn it on the 31st this in itself would be an offence. if you filled out the trader section then no sorn is required anyway as trade is exempt.

I have had over 172 cars and 121 bikes and have never had a problem with the dvla, yes they have made mistakes but i havent been on the recieveing end of any, touch wood.

    That is correct.

Just to expand on it a little...

Even if you had declared the vehicle SORN, as soon as you 'sold' the vehicle, that SORN declaration no longer has any effect. SORN is not transferable.

If it helps OP, I think you are worrying a bit too much.

I also think that the DVLA do not send out 'fines' until at least a complete month has passed without tax.
  • Thank you for your replies, i am worrying a little too much only because i know people who have been stung by the dvla. one in particular where they chased him for months threatening court action, decapitation, castration etc etc even though his car was taxed they insisted it wasnt.. took him 9 months to sort it out.... anyway we shall see
  • I think there are instructions on the reminder for what to do if you no longer own the vehicle. Follow them, and keep copies of everything, you should be fine, if they do fine you then you will have all the evidence you need to contest it. But I doubt they will, they know they need to allow for V5s and SORNs to be processed.

    hello,
My car died over christmas and it was time to ring a scrap man. I did this and it was collected on the 9th of january. the guy took the v5 leaving me the correct section to send off to the dvla.
    I have done this.
My question relates to taxing the vehicle. It is due to run out at the end of the month and obviously i dont want to renew the tax for a car i havnt got. however it could take 4 weeks for the form to be processed so does this mean that the dvla will automatically issue a fine in febuary ?(computer generated) will i still be liable even though i know longer have the vehicle, or should i declare it off the road and save some hassle..
    anyone had experience of this.

It could take 4 weeks but my experience is that you get the DVLA confirmation within a week. I think you are a bit quick out of the blocks to be in a panic now.

Have you had the tax renewal notice? If you don't get one then you know you are no longer the registered keeper. If you do get one then contact the DVLA.:)
  • As inactive said just sorn it to be safe then if they get it before or after it wont matter

i still sorn a car every year and i have no idea where it is
