DVLA question

hello,
My car died over christmas and it was time to ring a scrap man. I did this and it was collected on the 9th of january. the guy took the v5 leaving me the correct section to send off to the dvla.
I have done this.
My question relates to taxing the vehicle. It is due to run out at the end of the month and obviously i dont want to renew the tax for a car i havnt got. however it could take 4 weeks for the form to be processed so does this mean that the dvla will automatically issue a fine in febuary ?(computer generated) will i still be liable even though i know longer have the vehicle, or should i declare it off the road and save some hassle..
anyone had experience of this.

Give them a ring and explain the situation.

Did the " scrap man " issue a certificate of destruction?

Make sure that if you have not received a letter of confirmation from DVLA within 4 weeks that you get on to them straight away to ask why. I echo the comments above about the certificate of destruction.

No the scrap man didnt issue any certificate but filled in section 9 (if i remember right) which was the transfer to the motor trade and i posted that recorded delivery the next day.
i did ring them and was told i wouldnt get fined but to be honest im dubious. ive heard so many horror stories. i know the system will automatically issue a fine, its just a matter of when

OK, he probably was not an Authorised Car Dismantler then, I would SORN it to be on the safe side.

Give them a call, once they decide to issue a fine you won't shake em off short of going to court.

That's a good idea. Even better if you kept a copy of what you sent. Did you SORN the vehicle just before it was lifted onto his truck?

Do you need to SORN when you scrap it?

Not necessarily, but if I were as worried as the OP, I would do so as a precaution. The car would technically be "off road" after all the moment it's lifted off the road and just before the registered keeper changes.

The SORN receipt would cover anyone's back from any "computer says no" type auto-fines.
