Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I had exactly the same issue on my wifes 1998 1.25 Fiesta. The issue was with a sensor that regulates the revs. It screws into the gearbox (I think!) and has a electrical connecter going up to the top of the engine.

Problem is I cant remember the name of the bleedin thing but it sounds like you have exactly the same problem as I did. If I remember what it was ill post again but someone else may know.

I picked the part up for around a tenner from a scrappy and it was an easy DIY job to remove the old part and replace.

TPS (throttle position sensor) on the throttle body.

first i though another Idle control valve needs a clean but symptems of ISC is erratic idle intermitant stall. for it just to cut out on leaving the throttle off is largly suspect TPS. easily replaced and cheap part from motor factor.
  • Dont know if this is of any help but we had the exact same thing with our car.
Ended up been the dizzy cap and the rotary arm

  • Hi there.

What you've discribed is a standard 'old ford' fault. I've been heavily into the Puma owners club in the past and we came across this all the time.

Will be the idle control valve, as per the guide BenL posted.

This crops up over and over and over again with fords this age - Puma, Fiesta, Ka etc ALL get the same fault eventually. They will also start overheating at some point which will mean a new heater control valve.

BTW I'd recommend getting a new ICV rather than cleaning out with carb cleaner. A clean up will work but in my experience you'll just get the same issue a few months later. HOWEVER, start with a clean and see what happens, if it cures (or reduces the frequency of) the problem then at least you know it's responsible!

op has to keep throttle open for engine not to cut out.
engine cuts dead as soon as throttle closed either ISCV or TPS.
