Doubt it, OPEC would simply reduce supply.

Yesterday they released a statement stating they will not be doing anything about the price of oil, i.e., increasing supply.

However, it's not really the cost of oil thats the issue, its the tax.

Tax isn't the issue. In 200 years time we'll see that the issue was simple supply and demand economics as applied to any finite resource found in countries that were not under the control of the biggest consumers. No-one will be saying that tax bought the oil age to an end.

I prefer to be positive. The stone-age didn't end because of the shortage of stone - something better came along.

I'm not sure why people keep saying oil is used for fertiliser. Natural gas is used for fertiliser, not oil, to provide the hydrogen found in ammonia.

Apologies, I stand corrected, though of course oil & gas supplies are linked, despite my sloppy science. :o

OK this won't please some of you with Esso or BP shares, but here's a letter urging direct action that's just been forwarded to me. I have not checked the 'facts' behind it, but I'm sure someone will put me right if BP turn out to supply Sainsburys etc etc.

Personally, I like the idea, but that's maybe because I buy either Jet, Sainsburys or Shell because of my location.

    'Dear All,

Here is an interesting idea to think about (and act upon?)...unless you've already received the same message independently!

Please see what you think and pass it on if you agree with it.

We are hitting £129.9 a litre in some areas now and soon we will be faced with paying £1.50 per litre. So Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign' that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS - not sellers control the market place. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one) i.e. ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If all of you send it
to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)....and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on. By the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....

    THREE HUNDRED MILLION
    PEOPLE!!!

Again, all YOU have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP). How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Jet etc. i.e. Boycott BP and Esso.'

Interestingly, a petrol station I go past daily and often use, has cut 2p off diesel and unleaded. All others around that station at 1.33, however, this one is now £1.29 for diesel, 2p cut since yesterday.

    £1.24 for petrol.

Either an error, or they have possibly become one of the cheapest petrol stations around!

Thats about right,i work at Stanlow in the Northwest, we supply every major retailer, down into the Midlands and further North.

The UK does not have enough diesel refining capacity, most is imported, the current UK refineries were built for petrol demand.

Hence diesel will always be more expensive.

It would still last longer, so we could use it for longer. :)

In theory it should stay lower if there is less demand, opec never said they would reduce supply now? I believe they dont meet until june on production so perhaps that is why they are not doing anything.

I doubt it somehow mate, we use approx 1 million barrels a day, Japan 5 million a day and the US 19-20 million barrels a day, also you have the increasing demand from China & India. What we do here is practically irrelevant.
Have owned outright since Sept 2009, however I'm of the firm belief that high prices are a cancer on society, they have sucked money out of the economy, handing it to banks who've squandered it.

Any idea why the figure is 5x higher for Japan? AIUI the landmass is approximately the same as ours and the population double, so why such a high figure, especially when a lot of Japanese people drive little cars too.
