Advice about pregnancy and changing jobs appreciated

  • i changed job in september. we had been trying for a baby for over a year and a half so just decided to go about life as normal and when it happened deal with it then. if you dont get a job trying to conceive it'll be more upsetting every month your period arrives. you need to work or do something to keep focused on and take your mind off things. when i eventually decided to change jobs i literally fell pregnant a month after because i wasnt always hoping for it to happen. i am now 3 months pregnant and left my job last week after only 4 months because i didnt take to it and would hate to go back after having the baby - but i am still entitled to state maternity allowance because i have worked more than 26 weeks between april last year and last week in both of my jobs...... i had no idea i would still be entitled to maternity allowance so was really pleased with this. my employers didnt seem to mind me being pregnant and weren't difficult with me about it, but the job wasnt for me and i would not have been able to reduce my hours when i returned.

    hope this helps

I am in the same position as Malibusami. We've been trying for a baby for over 18 months now and i've hung on to my job 'in case' I got pregnant. It obviously isn't going to happen any time soon, so i've applied for and got another position in a company with amazing maternity benefits which I start in just over a week. Of course now, maybe the law of sod will happen and we'll fall. If it does, we won't care about maternity packages, we'll just cope because it will be the most wonderful thing that could happen after all this time.

It's sensible to think about the future, but you can't determine what will happen. When it comes to trying for a baby, you never know how quick it will happen and you can't put your life on hold. We did and we've lost 18 months. Do what will make you happy now and don't put too much thought into the future. You can't control it.

  • Thanks for all your advice, its really appreciated

I had a telephone interview for the job in question and got past the first hurdle so now only the 2nd to get through

Without jumping the gun, if I got the job should I go back on contraception for a few months or just carry on trying?????

    So many decisions!

I just wanted to tell you about my experience. I actually changed jobs when I was 3 months pregnant. I had found out I was pregnant and was working quite a long way from home but wasn't actually looking for a new job at the time. Then my ideal job came up that was a five minute walk from our house and was a promotion to manager as well. I decided that it would do no harm to go for the interview as I wasn't sure if I would actually get it or not. In the end, I did get the job but before I accepted I did tell them that I was expecting a baby but by that time, I don't think they could have taken back the offer due to equal working practices. I started the job when I was three and half months pregnant and worked for six months before I went on maternity leave. In addition, I am an accountant and the time when I was on maternity was December and January which are the busiest times of the year. My new employers never made me feel bad about taking the time off and were really lovely in supporting me whilst I was pregnant.

As I had changed jobs I wasn't entitled to maternity pay but instead got maternity allowance. We decided that it was worth the lesser pay due to the better job and being closer to home. It was definitely less stressful even though I was pregnant.

I would go for new jobs as it is not guaranteed that you will get pregnant straight away and you will feel happier and more settled if you are already in a new job once you do get pregnant.

Good luck with the second stage of the interview!
