if that is the cage in the link for sale, please think twice about welfare of your hamster, i think it would be ideal maybe for the smaller hamster types, but very cruel for anything bigger like a syrian hamster, also, the wheel with the cage provided isn't merely big enough for a syrian either, i have the savic hamster heaven cage (£100) and even my hamster is pretty big in that and it seems to be about 10 times as big as the one in the link.
That's the cage I have, I didn't pay that for it though.:)
  • Ouch, that Tesco Hamster Cage is tiny! The hamster would also have a field day gnawing the bars all night too if it had a chance to.

  • Yes it was the cage in the link, it was in the Stockton Tescos so I'm not sure if they have it in Liverpool

I've always quite fancied having a hamster but sadly I think my cats would like it even more.

I agree with that, but some of the cages sold in Petshops aren't big enough either.:)

And not even size just purely impractical! We bought two baby dwarf hamsters from Pets at home (I know - never again!) and the idiot recommended us a cage which was completely unsuitable for dwarf hamsters, the drink bottle was rubbish and leaked everywhere on top of that it was one that had to be fitted at a certain height through the plastic, the poor hammys were too small to even stand up to reach it + the wheel didn't work being fitted to the side of the cage. Took it back for a refund and got a much better one.

On a note about size of cages - I hate the thought of my hammy being stuck in her cage all day, got one of those metal pens and leave her door open and so she can come out of her cage whenever she pleases, and she's got lots of lovely toys to play with in her 'garden'. http://www.petsathome.com/shop/play-pen-for-hamsters-by-s.a.m.-15951 im sure it could be found cheaper elsewhere though....
I bought a Silent Spinner wheel from Pets at Home for my hamster. It has a stand but you can also attach it to the bars too. It's a bigger and more silent model.

You can look at forums like Hamster Hideout for advice on cages. They do have MSE ideas where you can convert old plastic storage boxes or fish aquarium tanks into cages for your hamster :D.

I would second the silent spinner - although I got mine elsewhere.

Started dwarf hammy off with the tiny one and she loved it but she eventually outgrew it, bought her the next size up (the standard one) and its actually bigger than most hamster wheels but it moves so well she has no trouble using it, and really is silent!

I killed my hamster by accidentally treading on it when i was a kid :( but we did have a hamster that lasted 4 years and a fish that is still alive 15 years on :)
  • Silent Spinners are amazing. I have 4 roboroski hamsters, a syrian and a chinese dwawf hamster who all use the silent spinner and I can never hear them at night (im in the room next door from my hamsters) .
I agree with what charlie chan said about the bars, the hamster will chew and chew on these until the paint comes off!! my syrian used to be in a cage and he used to climb all the way to the top and hang from the top of his cage by his little hands until he couldnt grip and more and fall down!!!-very sweet! I have brought all my hamsters from pets at home over the past 10 years, the least amount of time one has lived for has been 3 months but I did have a roboroski that lived until he was almost 4! random story but...... when I was younger, about 11 or 12 years old, I got a mouse from the animal shelter. I used to sneak into the kitchen and grab cod liver oil tablets and feed the oil to my mouse (about twice a week) and he was the longest living rodent that I have ever had and lived until he was almost 5!!!!
  • i would definately reccomend silent spinners, i have 5 of them on the go in my room at night (4hedgehogs and a hamster) and they make no noise at all
