Eurostar/TGV luggage

Options
Are the luggage rules strictly adhered to?

I'd like to take my classical guitar which is over 85cm (105cm long in fact but not as unwieldy as a cello, say). I don 't particularly trust registered luggage.

Thanks

  • As far as I know, (having lived in France) your luggage is not checked by the train conductor or anyone else for that matter. You put you luggage on yourself even in first class. Even if it doesnt fit in the baggage hold (which mine didnt once) you can put it on the luggage rack above the seat. It would definately fit a guitar there with ease.
  • OK thanks. Does that go for both Eurostar and TGV?
  • Yes. I think two large suitcases per person is the unofficial limit. If you can carry it on yourself then it's probably ok.

The Eurostar is basically derived from the single decker TGV trainset. Beware that on some 'Duplex' (double deck) TGVs there is less overhead luggage space.
  • Even if it does not fit in the over-head bit, or if you are on a double decker one you can hold the guitar beside, which I know is a pain (I had to do it too) but that would be the last resort, there will be more than enough room for it. I have seen people bring 3 suitcases on with them and I mean massive suitcases. All trains in France are run by the same company so wether is a TGV, Eurostar, Corail Intercities (regular trains) there is the same amount of room. Just be careful that no one puts their heavy suitcase on your guitar if you put it in the luggage hold.

Thanks very much for the replies. It's not going in the hold if I can help it...

That's not true, Eurostar is a separate company since last January and international trains often have carriages from other countries, with varying amounts of luggage space.

Also for Eurostar your luggage must fit though the X-ray machines, except if boarding a train from London in France.

Any idea on the dimensions? Google is telling me 120cm x 90cm.

    Hey Supernova,

I was hoping to take my guitar with me on the Eurostar too. How did you get on?
