Car insuance discounted by adding provisional driver

Please accept my apologies if this has been posted elsewhere - I did check ad couldn't see it.

My husbands car insurance has almost doubled since last year for no apparent reason other than that premiums have risen in general for everyone and we were looking at ways of bringing down the price (legally of course).

My sister in law told me that her hubby had the same problem and a VERY nice insurance agent advised them to add her as a named driver to his fully comp policy even though she only holds a provisional license. His price fell from £1200 to just over £800.

I gave it a go as I also have a provisional license and ours fell from £1200 to £950 - still very high but better. I had presumed that putting me on the policy would raise the premium - it seems not. Not sure why this works but hope it helps someone else.

Got to persuade hubby to teach me to drive now :rotfl:

and you'll probably see an even bigger drop if you can find a "mature" woman (mother/aunt/sister/friend) with full licence & clean record to add.

You will need to inform your insurer if you pass your test.

Expect a premium increase at that time.

    It’s bonkers…..

The OP, a non driver, can get her OH’s insurance reduced by taking out a provisional licence and adding herself as an additional driver.

But if she actually gets good at this driving lark (and proves it by passing a test) then the costs go up (or at least the reduction is less)?
  • Its all to do with statistics and another way how insurance companies rip you off.

I got 2 quotes last year for the same car. One in my name... having a full license, ive been driving for 22 years, 20 years No Claims Bonus, no points, no accidents, the premium came in at £360. I then got a quote for my girlfriend for the exact same car. She was 23, only had 2 years No Claims Bonus as she has had 2 (yes TWO) accidents, had 3 points on her license and only been driving for 5 years. Guess what? Yes, her premium came in at only £280.

Now I ask you, based upon that evidence, who is the higher risk? For me, I was amazed, as surely based on the facts I am a much safer risk than my girlfriend, but the insurance company didnt think so. I think its based purely on statistics that more men have more accidents than women. Maybe there are more male drivers on the road full stop, so bound to be more accidents involving men? I dont know! But I think insurance should be worked out on a "individual" basis, taking into account the drivers experience - including things like taking into account the types of vehicles the driver is used to driving.

Statistically you because you're due one:D

The world of insurance is crazy, in 18 years of driving I've never had a premium over £200, that's included 3rd party fire & theft when I was a risk category(young lad) to now driving a family car with added driver. However, my mate who is the same age can't seem to find a policy below £500, understandable when younger but not now he's 36. The only difference is postcode and we're about 8 miles apart!

Thanks all, last year the car insurance was £750 - it seems to have rocketed this year even though I've followed all of the MSE tips to bring down the costs and compared prices with everyone. Many people renewing now have said the same thing, his renewal with our current insurer Zurich was £2,200 from £750. 3 points come off hubby's license in July and he reahes 30 as well so hopefully prices will fall then, might be worth cancelling the current insurance then if the quotes are much lower ad taking out a fresh one as he already has maximum no claims.

I may not even take my test yet as I've failed 3 times already but might as well be on the policy if only to bring down the cost. Tried adding an Aunt to the policy but the cost went up for some reason. The current insrance expires on Sunday so going to wait til tomorrow before renewing as I think prics have cme down a little in he past week if only by a few pounds.

Car insurance is a nightmare :(

the rise is in accordance with the VAT rise but also reclassifaction of car insurance groups previously there used to be 1/20 now its 1/50 so where a fiesta used to be a group say 6 its now a group 14, some cars have ended up with a lower group rating others have moved up the scale to relect cost of repair more accurately visit thatchams websit for car insurance group for more info.

i'm on the hunt for a car ATM to reflect my needs as i have threechildren. im looking for a volvo s40 2003, 1.6-2.0 petrol.

ive been on my dads policy for just over 2 years accumilating NCB. with that info and putting my father on my quote the prices come out at just over £500.00 full comp without my father on i dont get any quote just a sorry we cannot quote at this time please call for more info! so all i can say is that mature named drivers fetch them down variably.

It worked the opposite way for me.

My Dad has been driving for 30 years, 1 claim 23 years ago, no points ever, yet my insurance quote with him on the policy is £85 more expensive than me on my own.

My wife has recently applied for her provisional so will have to see what happens when it comes to adding her.
