Installation mystery??!!

Every time I try to install new software I keep getting an error message saying "another installation is in progress". I've no idea what is being installed and don't know how to find out!!

This has happened when I try to install CCleaner & also Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 and other software.

I'm concerned as I recently uninstalled AVG and currently have no AV protection. I've tried to reinstall AVG but still get the same error message.

I've used "Housecall" tonight which hasn't thrown up any problems but don't know how reliable the results are.

Any ideas?

I assume you've restarted the machine? If not give it a restart, else look in Task Manager (right click Taskbar), Processes for a process called msiexec. Right click it and End Task on the process tree.

    Thanks for your reply.

I've restarted my laptop many times as I've been trying to solve this problem for nearly a week now!!

Just had a look in Task Manager but no sign of msiexec. :(

  • You don't say which version of Windows you have , also you say you have had this problem "for nearly a week now!!" have you tried system restore? (not restore to factory using restore partition)
There were new updates from Msoft today (well ok yesterday) but that will/should not affect things.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Basic. I've looked at system restore but can't go back further than yesterday. I suppose this should be set up to create restore points automatically at regular intervals but I've obviously not done this! :o

  • Hi, I am off to bed now but check your system clock to see if it does say 13/01/2011 00:38 I have seen problems with this because the PC battery(on the motherboard) is dead and so it is showing the 01/01/xxxx depending on your bios date(NONO sorry just realised you said Yesterday so the date is probably OK so[STRIKE]. If that's not the problem [/STRIKE]someone else will come along later this morning ...before I get back up ;)

Sounds to me like kaspersky didnt i nstall properly (probably because AVG was never removed fully)

Uninstall everything youve recently install. And (assuming you can after that) use the AVG removal tool

Tried this but still no joy!! Think it could be the update to BBC iPlayer that I tried to install. Tried to uninstall it but it says I can't do it as another installation is in progress!!

  • Another theory of mine is have you added anything via USB since this failed, I once remember USB Phone via USB cable I put in Windows was trying to install it forever (without me realising).

If you know which application caused it, "windows installer cleanup utility" may possibly help. or install latest version of windows installer
