  • Arthur Scargill? what do you think of him and also Mr Powell. He was at the boys school but a lot older than me.

dont worry i can handle any response. Dont be polite. I am an economist and can handle it.

I thought Arthur Scargill was originally right when he called the miners strike. I do think it lead to things which had far reaching repercussions with regards to the hardships and the unions. I know that sounds a general statement but i saw a lot of things go as a result of this( where i live) such a massive impact on a lot of communities. :(

Enoch Powell, was outspoken particularly with 'The rivers of blood speech' He was a man of strong convictions. I think he was one of our most interesting politicians, and i find him as interesting as Winston Churchill whose beliefs were also varied.
I know my mum hated him because of his Thalidomide scandal- one of her friends took it and had a Thalidomide baby- He was not popular for that.

I know it just happened at a really bad time for me. It was two of the longest years of my life. :( I ended up with post natal depression from the worry at the time..i think that's one of the reasons i am so paranoid about having money behind me. Not all down to the poll tax, just the general situation at the time. Everyone in my family was skint and not a lot of money around to help each other out either.:o I never want to revisit those times again.

So sorry things were so tough for you.
In fact I was wrong it was 3 years for you & 4 for us.
As we all know it led to Mrs T's downfall.
Hard to believe I was ever a Tory.It feels like it was in a different lifetime TBH :(.Well it was in a lot of ways.I am a different person now.

  • I am sorry. I hope you feel better now. You sound really moneysavvy to me. I am fortunate. Been lucky most of my life. Had a few financial hiccups recently but am not letting it get to me.

It was a long time ago- just brought back memories of that time:o

Beanie dont worry most of my friends still are Tories, they are still my friends sometime you agree to disagree but we have some great debates. I went to school with kids of people in her Cabinet. I did like a few things about her, she was a strong woman, she believed in things and followed her ideas through.

I think men( as in humans) are masters at manipulating their environment. Call it human nature in general..i was a great fan of a series of programmes in the 80's where they examined man's needs..how through war we progressed and how modern warfare, efficiency in killing( Nazi's) modern medicine,( Nazi surgeon's) TV, Internet etc developed from these needs of war...this is a generalized version.
Now in general man becomes obsessed with wanting things, the need to have what the Jones' have is an interesting one. So inherently we are all selfish as we want, we need and therefore we justify it..as it helps us live in modern society.
The truth is we can happily survive without perceived needs..hence oldstyle living and frugal living becoming more popular.

It did and i did admire her strength of character. I think it was one of our most interesting political times. I also enjoyed the debates with Neil Kinnock as well..they were good.

Much the same on miners front here.
People that havent spoken from that day to this & peope that havent worked since the mines closed.
Men old before their time who we owe so much to.
At the rate we are going they might be needing to reopen some of the pits.
