Connect is Barclays' marketing name for Visa Debit. For all intents and purposes, it's a Visa Debit card.

Electronic means that every time the card is used, the shop must check with the bank that the transaction is OK to go through. On some cards, this isn't necessary each and every time. Electronic cards tend to be given to people under 18, or people who essentially can't be trusted not to go overdrawn all the time.

  • Just reading the info on the Barclays website :

    2. You can also use your Barclays Cash Card wherever you see the LINK sign and your Barclays Connect Electronic Debit Card wherever you see a PLUS sign.

    3. To apply for a Barclays Visa Debit Card, you'll need permission from your parent or guardian. If you're a parent, please note that if you give your child a gift of money that produces more than £100 of gross interest per year, the income will normally be taxed as yours. Most children don't pay tax on savings interest. If this is the case for you, ask for the R85 form at a branch when you open your BarclayPlus children's bank account or go to the HM Revenue and Customs site (Link opens in a new window) and then once we receive your completed form, we'll pay interest without deducting tax.

It seems that without your mums permisson, you will only get the connect Card. I would assume though, if once you recieve the connect card, you get your parent to visit the branch with you, they may issue a debit card also.

  • It will be a Visa Debit. Connect is Barclays' brand name for their debit cards. Electronic just means that every time you make a card payment the payment terminal will check your account first to make sure the money's actually in there - you probably won't even noticed the difference!

  • If they ordered you a Cash Card it would have said "Cash Card" on the slip they printed.

It says "Connect - Electronic" so it's a Visa Debit card which checks for funds before a purchase will be authorised, if no funds are available then the transaction will simply decline.
