The problem is you either pay and get some selection on at least ability to pay if nothing else, or you go for a free site like Plenty of Fish and get everything including the bottom dwellers from the sea floor......or in the case of one guy I went on a date with (telling me about the other women he'd been on a date with) a potential partner with an axe in the living room and a bath in the front garden! No I get what your saying but what I didnt like about match was that even though you had paid it was impossible to tell who was a paid member or who was free and therefore couldnt reply to your messages.
I dont know if the guardian is the same....

Ah, I think it's the same with the Guardian site. If you haven't paid though, you can send some one line messages to the other person to say that you are/aren't interested, and vice versa. Not sure if this is the same as match.com. You can post a profile and check people out for free, so you could see what you think of it. Far fewer spelling mistakes in people's profiles than on match.com! (Appallingly snobby, I know!)
