If they sent it first class, and Smyths can prove they sent it, you should be able to claim the amount that is least out of £50 voucher (contents) or 100 * first class stamps....which works out at £41 so I guess it would be that?

I'm amazed that Smyths didn't send it recorded. :-(

Hope you can sort it out

Hmm £100 worth of stamps would last me 10 years or more;)

You cannot claim loss for vouchers sent by Royal Mail unless they are sent by Special Delivery. If they were just sent first class or first class recored, unfortunately I don't think Royal Mail will compensate anything.

I am quite confident that the promoter running the competition will send you a replacement prize though as it was their responsibility to get the prize to you safely.

The most RM will give you is 6 first class stamps... However its very odd that several people are having same issue.. I would expect Smyths to get RM to investigate as its sounds like somebody at RM has taken the items..

Most vouchers today have a unique code on them, and they will simply block them, so tills will flag them.

    Hope you get it sorted.

How awfull! Royal mail surely need to do something as two envelopes with vouchers in from same company must go through the same sorting office initially. I would think so anyway.
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.

Yes I thought 6 stamps too:o I am hoping they do investigate and surely must be able to cancel the stolen vouchers. This is the first time I've ever had this, and have had vouchers sent in the normal post before, sometimes it's the less valuable wins that get sent SD!

  • According to the Royal Mail site, the compensation for a lost piece of post that was sent first class is:

"For stamped and metered items a postage refund plus compensation on the basis of actual loss, where evidence of posting and evidence of value can be provided. This compensation is subject to the maximum payable being the lower of the market value of the item and statutory maximum of 100 x 1st Class stamps at the first weight step.

Postage refund (a minimum payment of 6 x 1st Class letter stamps at the first weight step) shall be payable where only basic evidence is provided or the item is of no intrinsic value.

Claims must be submitted within 12 months of posting."

If Smyths have proof of posting, which they may well have, and proof of the value of the contents (which again they may have) then you should be able to claim up to the larger amount (value of the 100*1st class stamps)?
  • Well done Lizzie - and well done Smyths! :-)
