How did we manage before 1948 when the NHS and the Welfare State came into being?
We did! Maybe we had a different attitude to life!

There was a different attitude. Kids and Adults were locked away. The disabled death rate in kids was very high. Instances of "cot death" caused by smothering we so far above today's "natural" rates. Disabled adults tended to take their own lives rather than be a burden. Many people starved to death. In Europe one country solved it's problems well before the date you mention. Germany and annexed countries proportion of disabled was nearly non existent, they gassed or shot them to prevent their being a burden.

Solders coming back from the field and the nation voted out Churchill in favour of Atlee who promised a caring state, a welfare state. That's part of where we are now. Are you a budding Nazi? Do you want to go back to a time when the above took place just so you can save the few pence a year that the disabled cost each tax payer? Not everyone was born with problems. My wife got hers whilst in uniformed service protecting people from low life, the offender who rammed head first into a fence when she was arresting him got 18 months, she got a permanent injury and a cut throat three time. My wife had several discs in her neck fixed. I had part of my problem due to rushing to an armed robbery, not my fault the driver failed to see a big White car with flashing lights and a siren, then I contracted Meningitis through that job trying to protect a School (you know that place paid for by taxes) from burglars. The lumber puncture added to the previous problems meaning pensioning at 30. I then worked in industry building a couple of successful companies. Now I cannot work, the wides my cater, but I cannot help but think that had we not been public servants we might both be fighting fit.

Suggest you decide, caring society or not. As they say in the lottery or from those of us who suffer, it could be you!

  • I filled in my DLA form online after i'd been advised to fill it in based on an average day with no medication so that is what i did.
I must admit it is hard to fill in when your condition varies so much day to day.

The form should really be filled in describing both your good bad and average days I would say, the form is quite clear you should describe how your condition varies if it does.

Explain what a bad day is, explain how you are on a good day, explain the ratio of good to bad days etc, explain what if anything can cause a bad day etc, what the effects of any actions are that cause problems etc.

If any welfare rights worker or charity (say CAB) or anything advises you on how to fill in a form, I would strongly suggest you ask for that advice in writing, so you should a problem ever occur in the future, can prove what you were advised by a professional.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that

Why no medication? I did mine based on average day and mentioned medication. (I have problems with mine though)

whilst this is probably ok I would also remember to emphasise the side effects of any medication

Just read your comments, are you actually being serious when you say that that info should be put on the forms?

You basically have to treat the DM as though they don't know the first thing about how your disability affects you. You can't assume that because you said you have x, that they'll know you'll have problems doing y.

I've always been told to put down better, average and bad days. You need to give as much information as possible.

I would say that if people can manage to do all of that then there can't be that much wrong with them. I would find that level of form filling impossible, and I don't claim DLA!
I wouldn't even bother putting pen to paper if I even thought that I was entitled to the benefit!

I managed all of that and there's lots wrong with me :D It wasn't impossible to do either. The main thing with the DLA form is that it takes time to fill in.

Some people do feel that the form is daunting, but it isn't necessarily so - although there will be a percentage of people who need help with it.

I found it easier to fill in the form over a few days or so. Much easier than sitting there for a few hours over one evening and doing it.

It's not just £37 pw week. DLA passports to other things such as disability premiums within benefits, road tax exemption, etc. For some it does mean they can get taxis to where they need to go instead of relying on others.
