Just check their website for return flights from Belfast to Southampton:

Belfast to Southampton - £18 + £19 charges

Southampton to Belfast - £18 + £46 charges!!

Same details both ways, luggage etc. How come the charges on the return leg are so high, have they just got this wrong. tried calling them but they are charging £0.10 per min and I'd already been waiting 20 mins

arrival taxes & departure taxes / charges might vary at each airport.

ie to rent a check in desk at southampton might be more expensive than at belfast, and other associated costs.

Not 100% sure, but just my though.

The weird thing is that for the same airline, return flights from Dublin to Southampton incur the same charges in both directions

Yes it has all to do with landing and take off charges imposed by airports, you will find similar differences for virtually every flight you book.

Because you are paying the airport charge (UB *not a tax) for departure Southampton and arrival Belfast on the one ticket.
You dont pay the UB charge for departures from Belfast only arrivals.
