Tesco - a joke, but I'm not laughing

Just need a vent about Tesco. I have never come across such diabolical staff at the nearest one to me. I decided to do my weekly shop at Tesco, rather than going further to Sainsbury's or Asda. I wish I hadnt been so lazy and gone the extra mile.

Firstly, I usually have a set list of shopping, maybe get a few extra's here and there, but I can usually calculate how much my shopping will cost at either Sainsbury's or Asda and therefore no nasty surprises.

On Saturday, I went into Tesco and bought my shopping. Shock 1 was at the checkout where my weekly shop was £15 over from what I usually spend. Checked till receipt, couldnt see any over charging, so thought "hell this place is dear".

Shock 2 was when I got home, the fresh meat (chicken) I had bought was off. I had checked the best by and use by dates before buying. When I got it out of the fridge that night, it was smelly and slimy, I was almost sick with the smell.

The next day I went back, got to customer services and explained situation, showed the assistant the chicken, I thought that these people were supposed to help, boy was i wrong, she looked blankly at me and said "what do you want me to do?" I explained that I'd only bought it the day before, it was off and I wished for them to either replace or refund the money. No raised voices at all.

This woman then blankly stared at me again and said "oh you want a manager....... I dunno if he's about". So I asked her to see if he was about. After ten mins a "manager" turned up, Well it was obvious that he didnt want to know, he totally refused to listen to me, kept stating that I hadnt put it in the fridge straight away as I claimed, it had obviously been left next to a heat source and thats why it was off. He then stated that because of this I would not get an exchange or refund.

I then stated that I beleived the fault wasnt mine, that maybe it was something wrong with their fridges, he laughed and said to me "you havin a joke aintcha?" It was like watching Eastenders with the aintcha and dunno's floating about. I calmly stated that I was not happy with the situation and that I would contact customer services and make a complaint. Again he laughed and stated that I'd get nowhere as he knew I was trying it on and would tell them so.

By this time I was fuming but kept calm and walked out. As I went out he was laughing with the assistant on the CS desk. Called customer services when I got home, got "oh dear, thats not good" and "oh yes well we will investigate this". So far not a thing from them.

Needless to say I wont shop in Tesco again, Sainsburys and Asda are miles better both in price and how they treat customers

Tesco, top supermarket? They havin a laugh:mad:

Oh yes and shock 3, all the fresh fruit and veg I got, is now on the compost heap as it went off in 2 days!
total airhead, total bimbo, very superficial:D

It's a bit late now, but you should have put it in the freezer, and got onto your local environmental health services.
You should still give them a call though, and report the incident, they may go and measure the fridges, and should put the complaint on record.
  • when I had a complaint, I emailed customer services and i get a good outcome (almost american style - money back + an extra bit on top). The in-store staff are useless.

Not very MSE but this is why we buy our fruit & veg in M&S. I remember years ago my mum went to cook up some cabbage for dinner. From the outside it was lovely and crisp and fresh but as soon as you cut into it, the smell of vinegar was overpowering. The cabbage was well within date but was obviously 'off'.

Our local Tesco is not too bad, but I have to say that when they have things on offer such as BOGOF's or a set price for two items then you can bet your bottom dollar they have no stock. They used to do vouchers so that when the offer went off, and the stocks came back in you could still get them at the discounted/offer price. They have stopped this! Sadly in the case of the chicken I would have rang the store and told them and furthermore, (in relation to the other poster who pointed this out) I would have rang the local council and spoke to enforcement officer on environmental health.

When Tesco were growing and trying to dominate market share they would bend over backwards to do anything for you. Sadly, as they have become the major market player with profits in excess of £2 billion they are more keen to appease their shareholders. What they fail to understand is that the customer is king and without customers walking through their doors they have no reason to exist nor do the staff have their jobs! If you starting annoying too many of Joe Public then ultimately your market share dwindles. Grocery shops are a very competitive market. We have a Tesco, Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local, Sainsbury's superstore, a soon to be Morrisons, ASDA, Co-oP, Lidl and two Aldi's all in a town with a population of around 90,000 people. Ultimately people vote with their feet. Yesterday I got vouchers through the door for £6.00 off a £30.00 shop at Sainsburys and Tesco are taking these vouchers that is how tight it is. In cities they can be more complacent - for a while although I do feel the tide is slowly turning!

Do you have a Waitrose nearby? Not as cheap necessarily, but probably not as dear as you expect, and the customer service, etc., is generally awesome.

Their x-ray machine must have been broken that day.
    Thank you all who post.
  • Thanks for the replys people, much appreciated. Heard from Tesco CS who informed me that they spoke to the manager who surprisingly cannot remember any details of my visit on Sunday and therefore will not comment on my complaint. The woman who spoke to me from Tesco CS has now informed me that no further action will be taken and my complaint has been closed! Oh and she said about my food bill being higher than Sainsbury's or Asda "well prices arent guaranteed to be lower on everything". :( So really I can only be guaranteed lower prices if I buy their crap value range...... no thanks

No surprises there, sounded totally uninterested in anything I said.

Think telephone to environmental health now in order and total advoidance of Tesco in future

We have a butchers locally but not a greengrocer! Butchers meat is lovely but we will get M&S meat if caught short.
