Have tried Registry Mechanic, and this seems to have speeded up the PC with no crashes over the last couple of days.
Interestingly, a number of the other suggestions were giving reports of between 500 and 700 problems, whereas Registry Mechanic found and repaired 255!!

The other thing I also do on a yearly basis is wipe them completely, a bit drastic I know, but it gets rid of all the rubbish you pick up through the year.
